Amazing Videos of Earth at Night from Space

While you’re curled up comfy in your bed each night, the crew of the International Space Station is getting unrivaled views of our planet. For anyone wishing they could see what the astronauts see, here are recent videos of the Earth at night taken from space.

These spectacular videos feature city lights piercing the darkness like shining beacons announcing the extent of human habitation. But they also include incredible natural phenomena — such as ethereal auroras, shimmering lightning, and the silvery Milky Way — which surpass anything created by man.

These videos are actually compilations combining hundreds of still images in order to give a good approximation of what the ISS crew sees as they fly over the Earth. Most of them are taken in sequences of one frame per second, closely resembling the true speed of the station in orbit.

This video from Jan. 29 features glowing nighttime lights along the Atlantic Coast of North America. Starting near the Gulf of Mexico, the ISS passes over recognizable cities such as New Orleans, Jacksonville, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and New York City. With the aurora borealis shining in the background, it ends with a view of Newfoundland and northern Canada.

Stunning New 3-D Moon Map Made From Lunar Data

Thanks to a new 3-D map of the moon, earthbound viewers can see its landscape with a clarity that only Apollo’s astronauts have previously enjoyed.

“NASA put out some amazing digital elevation data of the moon late last year, but nobody had released it in true 3-D. So I decided I would,” said Jeffrey Ambroziak, the map’s creator.

Ambroziak recently launched a Kickstarter project to fund the printing of a full-resolution, two-sided “National Geographic-style” 3-D moon map. The image above is a section of that full map. (No 3-D glasses? Follow Wired’s How-To Wiki article on creating a custom pair, which in a pinch can be done with just a CD jewel box and some markers.)

Traditional 3-D images create the illusion of depth by tricking your brain into merging two slightly different images. Red-blue anaglyphs that superimpose separate images use this technique, as do 3-D movies that alternate perspective in every second frame.

Ambroziak doesn’t consider these kinds of images to be truly 3-D, as viewers must look at them from a specific distance and angle. Glancing from the sides, or walking toward or away from the image, distorts or destroys the illusion.

“If you watch Avatar in 3-D and move toward the screen, it becomes so distorted you can’t watch it. With maps, a single perspective doesn’t cut it. You want to stick your nose right up there,” said Ambroziak.

Frustrated by these limitations, Ambroziak and his father, Russell Ambroziak, developed an algorithm to give 3-D maps a broader perspective. The trick works by both altering the brightness of pixels and stretching or compressing them, based on where they’re supposed to appear relative to a predetermined perspective.

In 1999 they filed a patent for their creation, called the Ambroziak Infinite Perspective Projection (or AIPP). At the time, however, there wasn’t enough data to make a moon map.

“Twelve years ago, when I invented the format, I was scratching the bottom of the barrel to get any data at all. Now there’s so much free data out there just waiting to be transformed,” said Ambroziak, who used NASA’s latest Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera data to create the new map.

The map allows for 3-D viewing from nearly any angle or distance. The moon map, along with his 3-D maps of Antarctica and Mars, have been displayed at the Underline art gallery in Manhattan. They’ve also captured the interest of the U.S. military, which could use such maps to train pilots over realistic terrain.

If enough people are interested in the full version of his new lunar map, which covers about 8 percent of the moon’s surface, he’ll look into crafting the remaining 92 percent of NASA’s lunar elevation data into 3-D maps.

“Until recently I’ve resisted licensing [AIPP],” he said. “But I loved the idea of using Kickstarter to gauge people’s interest. We’ll have to see what happens.”

De uñas contra ACTA

Este artículo se publicó originalmente en La Voz de Galicia, donde colaboramos semanalmente; esta es la versión con enlaces.

Sobre el papel el Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, o Acuerdo Comercial Anti-Falsificación, tiene como objetivo luchar contra el tráfico y la venta de falsificaciones de todo tipo, incluyendo la vulneración de derechos de autor a través de Internet.

Pero su proceso de negociación, iniciado oficialmente en 2008 cuando Australia, México, Nueva Zelanda, la República de Corea, y Singapur se unieron a las charlas que venían manteniendo sobre el tema los Estados Unidos y Japón, países que fueron los primeros en ponerse a desarrollar el tratado, Suiza y la Unión Europea, ha sido enormemente polémico porque el contenido del tratado se ha intentado mantener en secreto por todos los medios posibles.

De hecho, sólo mediante filtraciones se fueron conociendo aspectos como que pretendía incluir, entre otras cosas, la obligación para los países firmantes de instaurar políticas de corte del acceso a Internet de aquellos que se descargaran contenidos sometidos a derechos de autor.

De todos modos, cuando en abril de 2010 se hizo por fin público de manera oficial el borrador del tratado resultó que los años de protestas habían limado bastante sus dientes y que al final, al menos en el aspecto que atañe a Internet, no era tan malo como las filtraciones iniciales auguraban.

En concreto, el texto del tratado (PDF 254 KB) no obliga a nada a los países firmantes en cuanto al tipo de medidas a aplicar contra aquellos que se descarguen contenidos sometidos a derechos de autor, y además pide expresamente que las medidas a aplicar conserven principios fundamentales como la libertad de expresión, el derecho a un proceso justo, y la privacidad.

Pero también es cierto que todo dependerá de cómo los respectivos gobiernos decidan trasponerla en sus leyes nacionales si se aprueba.

Aún así, hay otros aspectos del tratado que siguen siendo preocupantes, y hay convocadas para mañana manifestaciones de protesta a lo largo y ancho de toda Europa para evitar que la Unión Europea ratifique el tratado el próximo mes de junio, aún cuando 22 de sus miembros, España incluida, ya lo han firmado.

Y es que no parece muy normal que un tratado que puede afectar a cientos de millones de ciudadanos se pueda negociar de espaldas a estos si no hay nada que ocultar.

Dan Lockton on behavioural heuristics

Behavioural change researcher Dan Lockton discusses an approach which has emerged out of some of the ethnographic work he has been doing for the Empower project, working on CarbonCulture with More Associates, where asking users questions about how and why they behaved in certain ways with technology (in particular around energy-using systems) led to answers which were resolvable into something like rules: behavioural heuristics [which are] rules (of thumb) that people might follow when interacting with a system.

“I would envisage that with user research framed and phrased in the right way, observation, interviews and actual behavioural data, it would be possible to extract heuristics in a form which are useful for selecting design patterns to apply. While in the workshop we ‘decomposed’ existing systems without doing any real user research, doing this alongside would enable the heuristics extracted to be compared and discrepancies investigated and resolved. The redesigned system could thus match much better the heuristics being followed by users, or, if necessary, help to shift those heuristics to more appropriate ones.”

Esto es un poco como los códigos para hacer trampas en los videojuegos pulsando «Arriba-Arriba-Abajo-Fuego mientras mantienes apretado Start con A y B a la vez»… Lo han publicado en Wired con el curioso título Prepare for Liftoff With Automotive Cheat Codes. El primero de los trucos / «características poco conocidas» sirve para poner en «modo lanzamiento» a un Lexus LFA y que salga disparado al acelerar a máxima potencia – el concepto mola, tal y como demuestran los de Top Gear en sus programas al hacer las pruebas; es relativamente habitual en los superdeportivos de hoy en día.

Los otros dos trucos son uno para desactivar el molesto e histérico ruidito beep, beep, beep de la marcha atrás de los Toyota Prius, y otro para acceder a la pantalla de diagnóstico del dinamómetro de los Mercedes-Benz Clase C. [Nota: tal y como está publicado ahora mismo en Wired los trucos 2 y 3 tienen el texto mal, intercambiados por error].

Ahora bien: como la mayor parte de estos «trucos» activan y desactivan sistemas casi vitales para la conducción segura, como el control de estabilidad ESP o el acelerador, lo que recomiendan es sencillamente no probarlos – aunque también dicen que algunos vienen explicados en el manual. ¿Manual? Si, eso que nadie se lee cuando compra un coche, a menos que sea alguien rematadamente geek.

Así que ya sabéis: si sois los afortunados propietarios de uno de estos ordenadores con ruedas también llamados «coches modernos» podéis hackearlos un poco, pero quedáis advertidos, niños.

U.S. Space Science Confronts New Economic Reality

Astronomers are worried.

It’s not some new unexplained mystery of the universe or the upcoming launch of a space telescope that is unnerving them, though. The problems they currently face are much more down-to-Earth — and the future of space exploration hangs in the balance.

The anxiety stems from the fact that astronomy, especially space-based astronomy, is just plain expensive. And with federal budgets tightening, the government will be less and less able to make huge investments in big science projects.

“We may see in the next decade or so an end to the search for the laws of nature which will not be resumed again in our own lifetimes,” warned Nobel Prize-winning physicist Steven Weinberg in January during the American Astronomical Society meeting in Austin, Texas.

The president’s upcoming 2013 federal budget request, which will be released Feb. 13, will include a taste of things to come for U.S. space science. NASA is likely to have fewer resources in the near future. Smaller reserves and fewer missions have already caused divisions and public fights between different groups of scientists. If astronomers want to build bigger telescopes that can do better science, NASA says that they have to band together and agree on a very limited number of big flagship projects.

“Right now, everyone needs to step back a little bit and ask not ‘how can I have mine’ but ‘how can we have ours,’” said astronomer Matt Mountain, director of the Space Telescope Science Institute that oversees operations of Hubble and other telescopes.

But some astronomers claim that consensus-building and political thinking are getting in the way of research. Packing multiple instruments into a single project leads to increased costs without necessarily delivering more science. The result is a mission that will be able to do more things, but less well.

“Everyone likes the big flashy flagships,” said astronomer Nahum Arav of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. “This is what Congress will approve, this is how we satisfy the community. But you are not being driven by science, you are driven by lots of different levels of political thinking.”

Instead, astronomers like Arav say it’s time for NASA to take a look at how it does business and see if there’s a better way. Rather than working on enormous and expensive projects, perhaps the community could be better served with a suite of smaller, cheaper, more focused missions and increased competition.

If the astronomy community can’t agree on which tack to take, science could suffer greatly and the United States stands to lose its dominance in space science and technology. If a big, expensive mission gets funding, but some of the astronomy community doesn’t support it, the project becomes extremely vulnerable to being killed by a Congress that needs to find budget cuts. This leaves European missions — which are often smaller in scale and enjoy long-term funding commitments — at the forefront.

Particle physicists learned the hard way that the government is willing to abandon a project even if billions of dollars have already been spent on it, as was the case with the Super Conducting Super Collider. When that project got the axe, Europe’s Large Hadron Collider stood to become the world’s biggest collider and the center of the particle physics world.

All of these concerns are coming to the forefront in anticipation of the new budget. In recent years, astronomy’s main federal funding sources, NASA and the National Science Foundation, have seen modest funding increases at best, while NASA’s 2012 funding fell roughly $650 million to $17.8 billion.

Shrinking budgets have already cast a shadow over nearly every area of astronomy. Space-based flagship-scale missions — projects like the Hubble space telescope or its successor, the James Webb Space Telescope — are likely to only get funded once every 20 or 30 years. Cost overruns on the massive James Webb project — which has grown from an original $1 billion estimate to the current $8.7 billion price tag — are an ever-increasing portion of NASA’s budget, leaving project managers of smaller missions looking nervously over their shoulders.

The NSF announced in January that it can no longer afford to support either of the large ground-based telescopes currently under construction, the Thirty Meter Telescope and the Giant Magellan Telescope. This throws the future of both projects into question and could cause them to lose their foreign investors to the European Extremely Large Telescope.

NASA’s planetary science division also seems destined to take a significant hit, possibly losing 20 percent of its budget next year with additional reductions through 2017. Earlier this week, the European Space Agency revealed that NASA may back out of two planned joint Mars missions — an orbiting satellite scheduled to launch in 2016 and an advanced rover that would be the first part of a Mars sample-return mission in 2018.

A pesar de semejante servicio a su país, Turing vivió sus últimos años infeliz porque fue condenado y castrado químicamente por practicar sexo homosexual. Finalmente, terminó suicidándose comiendo, presumiblemente, una manzana envenenada. La petición, la segunda en este sentido, ha sido rechazada bajo el argumento de que en aquella época la homosexualidad era delito. Pero, ¿no consiste un indulto precisamente en eso?

¿Vale la pena ITIL v3 Foundation?

Un pobrecito hablador nos cuenta: «El título explica brevemente lo que me gustaría saber. Viendo lo que se está pidiendo actualmente en muchas ofertas de trabajo para administradores de sistemas, me encuentro con que muchas de ellas piden ITIL. Estoy planteándome sacar la certificación preparándomelo por mi cuenta y después soltar la pasta para el examen únicamente. Me gustaría saber si realmente es algo que me vaya a ser útil y valga la pena, y si consideráis que es un requisito importante en el actual panorama laboral (por llamarlo así). Asímismo, si alguien me recomienda alguna certificación o formación no certificable pero que me pueda ser útil será bienvenido. La magnetosfera en colorines

Aunque parezca el FSM pintado por alguien bajo la influencia de alguna sustancia alucinógena esta imagen en realidad es una representación de cómo reacciona la magnetosfera terrestre cuando se produce una tormenta solar. La Tierra es la pelotilla gris.

Aunque la nota de prensa, When worlds collide, no explica mucho, los colores indican el nivel de mezcla entre las partículas procedentes del Sol y la magnetosfera.

El avance de esta simulación consiste en que gracias al uso del superordenador Cray XT5 Jaguar, que alcanza los 2,33 petaflops, ahora se modelan alrededor de 3,2 billones de partículas frente a los 1.000 millones de las simulaciones anteriores.

Esto permite a los científicos ir avanzando en el conocimiento de los efectos de las tormentas solares en la Tierra, y sobre todo, en la predicción de estos, algo fundamental para proteger astronautas y satélites que están en el espacio cuando estas se producen, y otro tipo de instalaciones que se pueden ver afectados por ellas.

El problema es que por ahora la potencia de estos ordenadores aún se queda corta, y los científicos estiman que necesitarán ordenadores mil veces más potentes que los que usan en la actualidad, capaces de operar en la gama de los exaflops.

Otro ejemplo más del sinsentido de las patentes en determinadas tecnologías. Otro caso más de un "troll de las patentes" que trata de obtener dinero con unas patentes absurdas o triviales. En este caso el "fenómeno" es Michael Doyle, dueño de una compañía que ya ganó en su momento una demanda a Microsoft por un importe de 521 millones de dólares. Leyendo este artículo hay un párrafo muy curioso: The University of California will receive 25 percent of the proceeds from the verdict, while Eolas will obtain the rest, minus legal fees and costs, Lueck said. The university owns the patent for the technology, which it licensed to Eolas in 1994. Eolas has one formal employee, Mike Doyle, who is a former University of California researcher. Al final llegaron a un acuerdo, por lo que la compañía de Redmond tuvo que pagar una cantidad elevada, no publicada, pero la parte que correspondió a la Universidad de California ascendió a 30.4 millones de dólares.

Origami Robots Run Only on Air

Powered by nothing more than puffs of air, robots molded from paper and silicone rubber can bend, twist, grip and even lift more than 100 times their weight.

The pneumatic prototypes aren’t as advanced as their metallic brothers, and the “soft” robots contain no electronics yet. But their creators, funded by Darpa, imagine applications where a soft-bot might be the best tool.

“If you want to go through a winding tube or rubble or some other tough environment that’s difficult to reach, you need to be flexible,” said chemist Xin Chen of Boston University, member of a team who describes their work in a Feb. 9 Advanced Functional Materials paper. “Soft robots can go a lot of places where hard robots cannot go.”

Robots crafted from metal or other hard materials, filled with electronics and powered by electricity are the mainstays of robotics. They can build cars, carry heavy equipment and even defuse bombs. Yet in some environments, flexibility is crucial.

As a result, engineers have looked to nature for ideas, with models inspired by insects, birds, snakes, fish and even dogs. Whitesides and his team have already developed air-powered rubber robots that can constrict like snakes and undulate under obstacles (video below).

Their new work takes the soft robots a step further by incorporating paper, fabric and wire mesh to add strength and definition to silicone-molded shapes. After they’re molded, the devices are hooked up to a simple compressed air source, such as a syringe.

Getting the soft robots to perform a particular action is a feat of origami: Folded in just the right way and glued in the right spots, for example, the researchers showed how a crinkled clump of silicone-soaked paper lifted a 2-pound weight. The force of the air required to drive it was roughly twice that of a human exhalation.

The team has also cylinders that blow into spheres, tubes that act like springs and compact stacks that turn into rigid rings or pipes.

In the future, the researchers hope to add wiring and electronics to bring even more functions to their forms.

The military is interested in such robots as weapons or spying devices, but beyond battlefields the researchers also envision shrinking their creations.

“In principle, you could scale down to microscopic or nanoscopic scales,” Chen said. “You can’t do the same with hard materials.”

Creía que el día que vi a alguien sumar las columnas de Excel con una calculadora lo había visto todo… Pero no, hay cosas peores :S

Y se fue liando por culpa de Hilario Ortigosa, así que para ir empezando:

@Allorente: Mi mujer presenció como imprimían un listado de personas en Word para teclearlo en Excel, mientras otra lo dictaba.

Se ve que a @DrJaus sí: A mi me vino un colega para que le ayudara en un estudio con su fichero de pacientes… En fichas de papel.
Y la verdad es que se observa una inusitada querencia al papel: a @verarex le pidieron en una universidad que compilara toda la legislación interna en DVD y al pedir los archivos le dijeron que «las resoluciones las tipeamos, las imprimimos y borramos el archivo, para no cargar la compu. Pero todo esta en papel, eh?» Eso sí, según ellos las tenían en formato digital… ¡Escaneadas como jpeg!.
O como la de alguien que imprimía una imagen para escanearla y luego adjuntarla, ya que era el procedimiento, según decía ella, como nos cuenta @etbsoft, con el bonus de que al corregirla dijo aquello de que «es que vosotros sois muy listos, ¿no?.»
Y no faltan los que dicen «Acabo de redactar el mail y te lo mando por fax», según pudo oír @juanerito.

Un pobrecito hablador nos cuenta: «Normalmente suelo realizar páginas web con varias personas en diferentes ciudades, y para pasarnos las tareas pendientes y cambios varios solemos hacerlo por correo electrónico. Lo ideal sería utilizar alguna aplicación online para tenerlo todo centralizado y ordenado por proyectos. He visto algo por internet y he visto Teambox, por ejemplo. ¿Cual me recomendaríais?
