As summer begins to wind down, the temperature still remains high in some places (in the Northern hemisphere, of course). Cool waters call out to those who would leap in, momentarily letting gravity have its way with them, pulling them down as they flail, shout or twist. Cette semaine, j’ai reçu quelques courriels d’amis me recommandant tous d’aller voir le travail du même photographe.

Tous me pointaient vers le site de Stephen Tamiesie un photographe de Portland, Oregon. Une fut une agréable découverte. J’ai passer du temps, à plusieurs reprises, dans les différentes catégories de son portfolio pour constater que les images que je préférais étaient contenues dans les séries Spaces et Signs of American Life. Je trouve d’ailleurs les deux séries très intéressantes, mais j’aurais peut-être préféré un editing plus serré. N’empêche que ses images en valent le détour.

Le Medef ouvre un département photo ... sur FlickR

Il y a peu de chance que mon adhésion au MEDEF soit effective un jour ...
Je ne fais pas partie de ces "aventuriers du 21 ème siècle". Ben ouais ! C'est les chefs d'entreprises qui aiment se désigner comme ça ... Les entreprises de presse, elles ... ben ... elles sont un peu "chasse gardée" si vous voyez ce que je veux dire. D'ailleurs il n'y a que les milliardaires que ça intéresse encore. On se demande pourquoi. Ouais ! Regardez "Le Monde", "Le Figaro", "Libé", "La Tribune", "Les Echos", "France-Soir" et bientôt "Le Parisien" ... je dois en oublier plein et ne parlons pas de la presse magazine ! ( moi je serais éventuellement intéressé par la reprise de "Charcuterie Magazine" avec un groupe d'investisseurs ...). Bon enfin là, je m'égare ...
Le patronat français et Laurence Parisot reçoivent tout un tas d'invités prestigieux: Medvedev, le premier Ministre de Corée, Shimon Péres, la Présidente du Chili, le premier Ministre indien, Bill Gates, le premier Ministre Irakien, Caroline Loeb et de Kersauzon (Tiens qu'est-ce qu'ils foutent là ceux-là ?), sans compter tout un tas de responsables politiques qu'on a ici. On aimerait bien exporter ! ... non pas les responsables politiques (ça personne ne veut). Au Medef, c'est des gens très importants (si ils sont plus là , la France coule et retourne à l'âge de pierre !). Donc ils ont plein de copains partout. Ça tombe bien FlickR est là pour échanger des photos avec ses copains et c'est pour ça qu'il y a eu un accord de signé avec Getty. Trop cool !
Hein ? Quoi ? Elles sont en haute définition et les canards vont les télécharger gratos ces images made in Medef ??
Pensez-vous ?! Les médias ont assez gueulé contre les images made in UMP pendant la campagne de Sarkozy !
T'as raison mon garçon. T'as qu'à croire ... Finalement, les gens des Ministères ont trouvé ça trop hype comme twitter !
Alors, ... Ben ils ont tous fait pareil ! Alors bien sûr, certains les ont mis en ©All rights reserved (une demande de ces cons de photographes sans doute). Sûr que ça va décourager les téléchargeurs compulsifs (Marianne2.fr, Wikipédia, Rue89, Courrier International, etc ...) Heureusement, le chômage baisse tous les mois selon le gouvernement, surtout chez les retraités.

Je vous recommande le travail de David Shea qui, au travers deux différentes séries, traite de l’industrie du charbon aux États-Unis.

Le charbon est l’une des ressources énergétiques principales produites aux États-Unis, avec un coût environnemental assez sévère et des enjeux politiques encore plus compliqués. David Shea documente l’industrie, la culture et l’environnement au travers ses séries « Removing Moutains (2007) » et « Plume (2009 – ) ».

With four months left in the year, 2010 is already the deadliest year yet for U.S. troops in Afghanistan. 321 have been killed so far (out of 485 total coalition deaths), compared with 313 deaths in all of 2009. As coalition troop size has increased, and moves have been made into Taliban strongholds, attacks are on the rise, and, according to General David Petraeus, "the footprint of the Taliban has spread". As combat operations in Iraq have now ended, the Obama administration says it will focus even more of its attention on the nearly 9-year-old conflict in Afghanistan. Collected here are images of the country and conflict over the past month, part of an ongoing monthly series on Afghanistan. This month marks the 12th entry in the series - I've been putting these together for one year now, and see no reason to stop any time soon. (42 photos total)

Une photo du pot de départ au Calamar. Merci à tous d'être venus. Ca m'a fait très plaisir.

Ca y est! Le projet germait depuis près d’une année, désormais il se concrétise. Je tape ces quelques lignes depuis Zurich, en attendant l’avion qui me déposera à Douala, capitale économique du Cameroun pour les dix prochains mois.

J’ai longtemps vécu le fait de ne pas être réformé de l’armée (contrairement à 95% des mecs de ma volée) comme une punition, une humiliation voire un échec dans mon parcours de vie. C’était jusqu’à ce que je décide de me renseigner sur les opportunités offertes par le Service Civil. Passionné de voyage, j’ai filtré pour ne voir que les affectations à l’étranger. Très rapidement, j’ai croché sur deux cahiers des charges: la Fondation Hirondelle, qui développe des médias indépendants dans des zones de crise, et le DM (département missionnaire) qui cherchait un professeur d’informatique. Deux postes qui me semblaient à ma portée et passionnants. C’est le DM qui m’a proposé en premier une affectation longue. J’avais au début peur que ma distance vis-a-vis des religions soit un obstacle (tant du côté côté que du mien), mais, au cours des différents entretiens, j’ai pu éloigner ces craintes. Voilà comment la punition militaire s’est transformée en une formidable opportunité.

Je vivrai dans le quartier “très populaire” de New Bell, et j’enseignerai l’informatique dans le collège du même nom. Une très belle expérience en perspective: des rencontres multiples, la découverte de conditions de vie différentes, un paysage (et un climat) très différents.

A côté de ce job d’enseignant, j’aimerais alimenter un peu ce blog de petits articles sur la vie là bas, un peu comme j’avais fait en Ukraine. Je ne sais pas exactement ce que ça donnera, les variables sont multiples: quelle sera la qualité de la connexion, aurais-je le temps, que dire et que ne pas dire. Contrairement à l’Ukraine, je me rends au Cameroun au nom d’une organisation, une organisation implantée dans le pays de surcroît. Une phrase mal interprétée pourrait avoir potentiellement d’autres conséquences que quand je vais quelque part à titre individuel.

Les adieux étaient déchirants, surtout qu’aucun retour en Suisse n’est prévu avant juin. Mais arrivé à Zurich, je sentais la joie de voyager revenir. Ca fait du bien!

L’embarquement ne va pas tarder. J’espère trouver une connexion internet assez rapidement pour faire part des premières impressions.

Ramadan 2010

Muslim men and women across the world are currently observing Ramadan, a month long celebration of self-purification and restraint. During Ramadan, the Muslim community fast, abstaining from food, drink, smoking and sex between sunrise and sunset. Muslims break their fast after sunset with an evening meal called Iftar, where a date is the first thing eaten followed by a traditional meal. During this time, Muslims are also encouraged to read the entire Quran, to give freely to those in need, and strengthen their ties to God through prayer. The goal of the fast is to teach humility, patience and sacrifice, and to ask forgiveness, practice self-restraint, and pray for guidance in the future. Ce sont les images de Guy Sargent. La série « What lies beneath the surface » (Ce qui ce cache sous la surface) est une longue série (on parle de presque d’une centaine d’images) inspirée par l’histoire européenne. La série débute sur des images de paysage désert où la présence de l’être humain est absente. Par la suite, on passe aux constructions des églises et cathédrales de l’époque médiévale, puis des images qui nous rappelle les deux grandes guerres pour, finalement, aboutir dans aux villes contemporaines à l’architecture moderne. « What lies beneath the surface » est un projet en constante évolution débuté en 2006. Il est donc possible que la forme finale de la série soit altérée. Peut-être que des photos s’ajouteront ou seront retirées. Il s’agit d’un projet d’envergure comportant une variété d’images, d’atmosphères et de sujets qui vaut la peine que l’on s’y attarde.

Au coude a coude

Le milieu politique se crispe, se resserre autour de l'image. Les photographes, les caméramans, sont définitivement parqués, agglomérés, tenus au coude a coude. Nous nous tenons chauds lors des arrivées des personnages politiques agitées. Témoignage lors de la dernière université d'été du parti socialiste à la Rochelle.
Lorsque les deux vedettes du parti, Martine Aubry et Ségolène Royal arrivent, je ne suis pas dedans..c'est rien de le dire. Dépassé par les événements, je décide de témoigner de ma propre échappée. Mon renoncement provisoire à faire une image digne de ce nom me fait empoigner mon micro. L'envie de vous faire écouter de l'intérieur la bataille des soutiers de l'info pour ramener l'image que tout le monde conteste, mais que tout le monde veut voir. Nous poussons des épaules. Tendons les bras. Photographions à l'aveugle. L'œil dépassé se fie à l'oreille pour orienter les objectifs. Le corps s'oublie. Les mains des gars du service d'ordre nous dirigent. Nous piétinons à reculons, le regard collé malgré tout au viseur lorsque nous le pouvons. Le doigt se fait frénétique. Il appuie presque seul. Perdus dans le fracas, je me tourne vers mes semblables pour vous montrer l'envers du décor. Nous aurons tous cette image des deux femmes. Elle sera plus moins construite selon les uns et les autres.. La qualité du regard n'y sera pour rien..Cette image est le résultat d'une bataille légère et éphémère, Récompense pour ceux qui sont les mieux bâtis ou les plus malins. Je ne fais partie ni des uns, ni des autres. J'essaie de construire autre chose de mon décalage ou de ma perdition..(c'est selon..)

Somalia: The Daunted Nation

“That is, in the UN’s terms, a crisis … But because it’s been a similarly awful picture for such a long time, the crisis warning bell no longer produces the fire brigade”, Paul Smith-Lomas , Oxfam GB’s east Africa director.

Somalia presents the single largest humanitarian challenge in the world. “Over 3.6 million people, or half of Somalia’s population, are currently in desperate need of aid. In terms of numbers of people, access to any form of social welfare or livelihood choices, and the apparent intractability of it (the conflict in Somalia), it is the most pressing concern in humanitarian terms that we have globally”, Jane Cocking the humanitarian director for OXFAM GB said.

In the past 21 years, the country has lived through droughts and famines, wars and conflicts, massive population displacements, appalling human rights violations and state orchestrated terror. These conditions continue to devastate the country. Civilians without any other options are pouring into impoverished camps in neighbouring Kenya, Ethiopia and Yemen. In Somalia, 1.3 million persons are living in makeshift camps, without assistance from humanitarian agencies or from the UN

Robbert Van den Berg, Oxfam International’s spokesman for the Horn of Africa, describes the conditions in the refugee camps as “barely fit for humans”. The UN Food Security and Nutrition Analysis Unit for Somalia, issued a report on Tuesday, August 25, 2009 saying Somalia is now in its worst humanitarian crisis for 18 years.

Operation Inshallah

Somali warlords and Islamic insurgents have been powerful enough to drive out foreign troops serving under the United Nations, including Americans, Germans, French and Norwegians. But none of them were strong enough to kill the others.

In a state of total destitution, were its population depends solely on a small amount of international relief aid, the Transitional Federal Government, headed by the previous chairman of the Islamic Courts Union, a former school teacher and once a head wanted by the Bush Administration, President Sheikh Sharif, is now, with support from his old American enemies, planning a major offensive against his old insurgent friends.

Sheik Sharif is a thinking man. He is 45 years old, but today, without his long beard, wearing special tailored blue dresses and expensive diamond engraved watches, he looks younger. After almost being killed during an American air strike in 2006, Sheikh Sharif managed to escape to Kenya and asked for political protection. Almost 3 years later he was invited to meet Mrs Hillary Clinton, the United States Secretary of State, who said “We believe that his government is the best hope we had, for quite sometime, for a return to stability and a possibility for progress in Somalia.” Sheik Sharif had moved back to Mogadishu. He left behind in Kenya the Kalashnikov and the simple clothes he used to wear when he tried to convince the rest of the world that his Islamic courts were not a treat, dismissing any accusation of links with Al Qaeda or any terrorist organisation.

Somalia struggles to rescue its identity from a deleterious war, and Sheik Shari, tried to be more than just a cosmetic treatment in his country´s mutilated face. He promised he would be able to produce profound facial and moral reconstruction. After only one year as president, he has already understood the treatment might be harder than he previously thought.

He lives isolated in Villa Somalia, a fortress constructed during the days of Italian colonial rule. The first entrance is guarded by doubtful soldiers from the new Somali Army. Young men, mostly in their early 20’s or younger, some wearing light brown, oversized military uniforms with sandals, others, in the best Rambo style, with their chests shielded by bullet-belts, ready to feed their rusted Chinese-made Kalashnikovs. They spend the days together, protecting their boney faces from the sulphurous East African sun under an old, improvised tarp shelter. In Mogadishu, soldiers with khat-fuelled values are one hundred dollars a month loyal to anyone and therefore, the president cannot trust to leave his own men to go beyond the first gate. From there, only high-level government officers and African Union soldiers can enter.

The UN sent the African Union Soldiers to Mogadishu (AMISOM) to replace the invading Ethiopian army. They have been in Mogadishu for 3 year with a peacekeeping mandate, but there is no peace to keep and the AU soldiers are constantly in close fighting with insurgents wearing civilian clothes. Their weapons, powerful and destructive, are not engineered to make distinctions in their targets. During its years in Mogadishu, AMISOM has been responsible for the death of many civilians.

Under the same protection but in separate houses, are the president’s three wives living with their respective children. The president is a very busy man administrating an area the size of a small middle class condominium with protocols of a nation. He has little liberty to move around his fortress. Bullets are constantly flying over people´s heads, leaving signs of destruction on almost every wall. His own home is ironically on the top of a hill, less than a kilometer away from Bakara Market, the area controlled by Al Shabaab. From his veranda, if he were allowed to go out, he would be able to see his enemies running and shooting.

Discouraged by the slow or non-existent political or social progress in Mogadishu, some government officials express their frustration with cynicism and refer to the president’s plans to attack his enemies as “Operation Inshallah,” because it will only begin when Allah wants it to. Although the new Somali Army has some 9,000 soldiers, the president can only depend on a few units. Many soldiers desert, because there are no officers and no safe barracks, and all too often, there is no pay. Some sell their weapons to the enemy, while others mow each other down in battles between clans.

New soldiers are being trained, in Kenya, Uganda and Sudan, partly with the help of the Americans and the European Union. But no one knows yet whether they will ever arrive in Mogadishu, or whether they will fight on the president’s side.

People dying like ants stepped on.

Mohammed Yusuf Hassan is the chief physician at the Medina hospital, the best working hospital in Mogadishu thanks to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) support. We met for the first time almost one year ago on an African Express flight leaving Mogadishu to Nairobi and become good friends. Mohammed is an interesting and somehow inspiring person. He could be living a good life in Europe but decided to come back to Mogadishu and help in any way. Mohammed studied medicine in La Sapienza university of Rome. He is officially retired and could be enjoying life near his grandchildren, but he is not a normal person. ‘I can’t be normal, or else I wouldn’t be here’ he says smiling. The Medina is a complex of pre-fabricated green containers and flat-roofed buildings in a park behind an old gate, where blood red flamboyant trees provide shade.

The shadows produced by those beautiful trees are welcomed by patients with normal diseases like little Mohammed. He is 3 years old and has been diagnosed with leukaemia. Patients like him have to lie underneath the trees, because the corridors inside are full of patients with open bullets wounds that could be infected if the patients were kept outside.

Doctor Mohammed really inspires me. He is 51, but he looks at least 15 years older and is clearly exhausted. “Everything here is bad. We Somalis are all traumatized. You can die any day. We are like ants that are being stepped on, a forgotten people. Darfur is a paradise compared to Mogadishu. But Darfur is new and we are old. The children have always been dying here, and no one sees it anymore.”

“An entire generation has grown up in this war,” he says, “and that several generations will never get it out of their heads. This too explains why there is no end to the suffering.”

Short-lived lives.

I´m invited to film a birth and I feel happy. I imagine a happy birth in my mind and I prepare my camera to capture the moment when the mother meets her baby for the first time. I never ask any question about her. My need to experience a moment of beauty was too strong. She is crying and the labor seens not to start. After a short meeting, the doctors decide to operate on the mother. She is young and after she receives the epidural anesthesia, her words make no sense and her eyes show no more pain. I move from my position to give the doctors better space to work. A young Iraqi doctor is leading the team. I´m impressed, she looks very small and does not want to talk or even tell me her name, but she shows total control over the situation.

Unexpectedly, at least for me, the door opens violently and a group of noisy, anguished young men enter the room pushing a stretcher. They say in Somali something that I cannot understand in words, but that I can feel in volume is call for help. On the stretcher I can see a scrawny body writhing in convulsions. His clothes, pale jeans, sandals and a short-sleeved beige shirt are soaked in a mixture of dark blood and dusty red sand. He is not older than 20 and he was shot in the neck, just bellow his month, his hemorrhagic wound making it impossible for him to breathe. The Iraqi doctor orders two of her Somali assistants to take care of him as she is trying to get through the diverse layers of muscle in the mothers belly and reach the baby´s head. They try to help the man with a tracheotomy. There is no time for anesthesia or proper preparation, and, without a sound, he shows his pain by hitting the wall, the table and the doctors with his feet and weak arms. I feel stressed and I don´t know what to film. The birth or this dying man I know nothing about. Moments later destiny gives me an orientation and he dies. I feel I can concentrate on my first idea of happiness again and I see a very small girl coming out to this world for the first time. She is rapidly moved to another table by a nurse holding the little body head down. I try to see if the mother is ok and go back to the baby. I see another Iraqi doctor trying to stimulate her heart and lungs. I´m not an expert but I find the shape of her head strange. The nurse leaves the little body over the small table, near some surgical tools used by the doctors trying to save the boy. I ask what is happening and a nurse says that the little girl is dead.

I go back to Hassan and try to find the boy´s name. He operates on young men, again and again, and eventually many end up dead. “Sometimes I think that we are just repairing guns here, guns that are reused until they break. And that the man we are operating on today could shoot a child tomorrow.” I start to understand why he says he is not a normal person. If this is a normal day at Medina Hospital, how can a man like Hassan keep his sanity?

The French Prime Minister Georges Clemenceau, said once that “War is a series of catastrophes that results in a victory.”

For 20 years, no one has been strong enough to claim victory in Somalia, and the country´s humanitarian catastrophe will only continue. The UN and African Union officers estimate that about 1,000 people, mostly civilians, die each month in the struggle for Mogadishu in a senseless civil war.

wagon isolé

La direction de la SNCF a décidé l’abandon du transport des marchandises par la technique dite du « wagon isolé* » et donc la disparition du fret de proximité. La gare de triage de Villeneuve-Saint-Georges, fleuron ferroviaire du Val-de-Marne, ne traitera plus que 160 wagons en décembre 2010. Elle en traitait 10 fois plus en 2000.
Ce contresens environnemental répond à des impératifs de rendement pour l’entreprise. Les conséquences économiques et sociales de cette décision s’annoncent désastreuses à l’échelle de la ville.

*cette technique consiste à acheminer des wagons individuels ou des groupes de wagons, qui sont assemblés pour former des trains dans les gares de triage.

L’eau par Balazs Gardi

Depuis quelque temps maintenant Balazs Gardi travaille sur son projet « Facing Water Crisis », un site web contenant de la photographie de plusieurs endroits différents sur notre planète qui ont en commun leurs manques d’eau potable, un problème auquel nous devrons tous éventuellement faire face.

Je vous invite à regarder la vidéo qui suit. Elle se concentre sur favelas de Rio. Une très bonne utilisation du multimédia selon moi.

Remembering Katrina, five years ago

Sunday, August 29, 2010 will mark the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina's landfall in Louisiana. Five years ago, Katrina struck the Gulf Coast, centered on New Orleans, as a Category 3 hurricane with sustained winds of 125 mph (205 km/h). More than fifty levees were breached by its storm surge, causing massive flooding. Over 1,800 Gulf Coast residents lost their lives then, and damages totaled more than $80 billion - the costliest hurricane in U.S. history. Many intangible things were damaged then as well, communities were erased as their neighborhoods washed away, much of historic New Orleans was badly damaged, and frustration and anger remain towards an inadequate immediate response by the U.S. government. Collected here are images from five years ago, as well as some from the past few weeks, in New Orleans and the surrounding area. (49 photos total)

Extrait : Au fond de la cale de l’éléphant, aux îles Lavezzi, au sud de la Corse, La Galiote, un bateau de plongée de 20m a jeté l’ancre pour une semaine.

En haut du mat flotte le pavillon de l’association « Bout de vie » : un dauphin dont la queue est détaché du reste du corps. A bord, des hommes et des femmes amputés ou hémiplégiques sont venus en stage, s’adonner à la plongée sous-marine…

Prairieland de Dave Jordano

Les images d’aujourd’hui font partie d’un projet d’envergure.

Il s’agit de l’oeuvre du photographe Dave Jordano. Ce projet, en cours de production, est composé de plusieurs séries d’images (Interiors, Small Towns, Habitants, On the Fringe, etc.) qui forment le projet Prairieland. Chacune de ses séries s’attarde sur un aspect bien précis des « Prairie States » des États-Unis. Ces états des prairies sont le pendant étatsunien de nos provinces centrales (Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, etc.). Des états principalement cultivateurs de céréales et éleveurs de bétails. Dave s’attarde principalement sur l’Illinois. Il faut bien prendre le temps de regarder chacune des séries pour comprendre et apprécier l’ampleur du travail documentaire que le photographe a entrepris.
