Hay datos interesantes de Social Media en serio; la página de producto más grande y con más usuarios de Facebook es la de Obama que fue creada por un equipo de estrategas que trabajaban 24 horas sobre esta, pero la segunda página más grande de Facebook tiene 3.3 millones de Fans y es la de Coca-Cola… y no la creó Coca sino tres fans de la marca.

Ahora Coca les preguntó si pueden trabajar juntos en el mantenimiento y desarrollo de la misma, con lo que la marca está mostrandoles un respeto gigantesco a sus fanáticos y pidiendoles permiso para desarrollar algo juntos… en vez de caerles encima con el “reclamo de marca” que cualquier abogado promedio haría o en vez de crear la “página oficial”, poner a una agencia “digital” a trabajar en ella y ver como todo el presupuesto dedicado empalidece frente al verdadero poder de dos fanáticos convertidos en evangelistas de la marca.

Esto es uno de los mejores ejemplos del poder de los medios sociales y de una marca que los respeta, mientras la página oficial de Pepsi languidece ad-eternum :)

Disclaimer: debo reconocerlo… soy de los que en un bar o restaurante cuando pido una Coca Cola no acepta que le traigan una Pepsi porque “es lo mismo” :P

Microsoft to Release IE8 Today

Microsoft is expected to announce the final release of Internet Explorer 8.0 at MIX09 in Las Vegas today. It will be released to the public at 12.00 noon New York time (4pm UTC/GMT) and be available for download from the Microsoft website.

This is the first major release for the browser since IE7 in October 2006. Since that time, both Apple and Google entered the market with their own critically acclaimed browsers and Mozilla released Firefox 3.0, with v3.5 coming soon.

Microsoft claims that IE8:

is almost 50% faster than other browsers at page loading
offers quicker browsing with Accelerators
allows websites designed for older browsers to be “fixed” using the Compatibility View button
helps you keep up to date with news and other information with Web Slices, and
blocks two to four times the amount of malware caught by rival browsers

Whether these claims stand up to closer scrutiny will be evident soon.

El iPhone 3.0 debió haber sido el iPhone 1.0

Con todas las características anunciadas para el iPhone 3.0 (sin fecha de cuando estará disponible), por fin estará a un mejor nivel comparado a muchas capacidades técnicas que otros teléfonos/pda’s ya incluían desde hace años.

Seguro que solo con la interfaz del iPhone en su primera versión, vino a matar a todas las demás plataformas móviles existentes; pero el hecho que no incluyera ni siquiera copiar y pegar ha sido algo que siempre he odiado. Posiblemente hasta ya me acostumbre a la falta de.

Aún no me acostumbro a esa forma de Apple de lanzar cosas a medias, para después terminar de arreglar. En fin, al menos ahora mi hermano (y su windows mobile 6.1) ya no se burlará tanto de mi iPhone XD

- Los clientes no entienden nuestra interfaz de usuario

- Deberían leer el manual.

- Nuestro manual es más confuso que nuestra interfaz de usuario.
- Pueden utilizar nuestra base de datos de soporte en línea.

- Es más confusa que nuestro manual.

- No tenemos dinero para solucionar nada de todo esto.

- En situaciones así, me gusta ir a mi lugar especial.

- Algún día espero tener un lugar especial que sea suficientemente grande para mi cuerpo entero.

Apple: “el chip no es para DRM sino para pago de licencias”

Si cualquier empresa fabricante de consumer electronics o de PCs incluyera un chip secreto en una pieza clave de sus equipos para forzar a los creadores de accesorios a pagar royalties por uso de licencias, todos se quejarían… Apple lo hace, lo reconoce al ser descubierto y el cielo no cae sobre sus cabezas excepto de algunos fanáticos del software libre como la Electronic Frontier Foundation.

El campo de distorsión de la realidad alrededor de la marca es sinceramente impresionante, y lo digo usando una Macbook Pro, conectada vía un Time Capsule y escuchando música gracias a un iPod Classic con lo que el recurso de “eres un MS fanboy” es más estúpido que cualquier otro argumento para criticarme.

“Un político peruano dice que si queremos derrotar el hambre, debemos dejar de gastar dinero en museos. Como si la cultura de los pueblos no fuese el camino más eficaz para alcanzar su emancipación y prosperidad.

Otro político peruano sale a decir por qué vamos a estar removiendo esos hechos tan terribles de la guerra, justo hoy que vivimos momentos de progreso inusitado. Como si para Alemania o Japón hubiese sido mejor una pérdida selectiva de la memoria en vez del proceso autocrítico que les permitió reconstruirse y alcanzar el liderazgo que hoy ostentan.

Otro político honesto y bien intencionado sale al frente a decir que no se preocupen, que él ofrece un terreno para hacer el museo. Oferta que es respondida por otro político diciendo que, en su profunda reflexión, los peruanos no han curado la herida y que no están preparados para estos museos. Casi como diciéndonos: de los retos difíciles que se encarguen los que vengan, que de los fáciles me encargo yo.

En medio de este bullicio aparece finalmente otro político advirtiendo que todo es una cortina de humo para tapar la verdadera traición a nuestro pueblo: El TLC con Chile. Que nuestras fronteras han sido abiertas para que otra vez el país del sur nos invada. Se olvida que las fronteras han sido abiertas de ambos lados y que esta es la oportunidad para que aquello que los peruanos sabemos hacer tan bien, pueda conquistar un mercado chileno que hace ya buen tiempo ha caído seducido ante los encantos de nuestra gastronomía, joyería y textilería.

En fin, son cosas de este Perú que finalmente todos juntos vamos construyendo, a pesar de algunos de nuestros pintorescos políticos.”

Seguimos las prácticas elegidas por nosotros mismos, para garantizar la calidad de nuestro trabajo. Adoptamos los procesos de desarrollo para que sirvan a nuestras habilidades y talentos. Estamos centrados en la habilidad, antes que en el proceso. Somos generalistas ....

Son los principios del artesano de software, una metáfora acuñada por Pete McBreen en su libro "Software Craftsmanship" (2002) para definir una forma de programar, más próxima a la agilidad que a los procedimientos.

La conferencia del 29 de enero en Londres sobre artesanía del software , junto con la publicación, por parte de la empresa 8th light de del "manifiesto de la artesanía del software " presenta estos días las metáforas de "artesano" "artista" como preferibles a las de "ingeniero" o "arquitecto"

La discusión tiene para rato, y mejor no entrar en un artículo que por largo y denso va a desbordar lo que un sábado de fiesta necesita, pero no nos podemos resistir a la curiosidad de saber qué piensa la mayoría:

UX Suggestion Box - Drupal7 UX

If you were at the recent Drupalcon in DC you may have seen Mark Boulton and I at the UX Table plying people with jellybeans and requesting offerings to our Drupal7 UX Suggestion Box. This is just one of the ways that we are hoping to engage the Drupal community in this project and to continue that process, you’ll find below the contents of the suggestion box (as of late Friday, unfortunately our desk and all it’s contents was trashed on Friday evening (boo!) so it’s possible we’ve missed a few suggestions).

Please take a moment to look through the very roughly (and quite possibly not entirely well) sorted list below - we’d be very interested to receive more suggestions from you or your comments on the suggestions collected thus far.

There are multiple destinations for the suggestions collected - many of these will feed into our thinking for this project, but there are also a few that will probably be added to the issue queue (if they’re not there already) and a few to add to a wishlist for releases beyond Drupal7 - don’t feel as though you need to censor yourself to only what you think is reasonable to expect for Drupal7 - let us know what you’d like and we’ll see what we can do to help make it happen!

Drupalcon DC UX Suggestion box contents:

Information Architecture (Task Based)

▪    Role/Task/Workflow
⁃    Have ‘packages’ that automatically install common functionality. Talk to Dimitri about install profiles
⁃    CRUD (Create, Read, Update and Delete) admin for specific admin types, terms etc.
⁃    Distinguish between site builders, site managers and site end users
⁃    Better default roles & config
⁃    Workflow improvements to core
▪    ‘Feature based’ administration/ Add ‘features’ then configure content types, views, categories etc. for each one. Everything becomes a feature, some that you can’t disable eg blog, forum, wiki, required ones for example are ‘users’
▪    Bring all options for content types into the same area but also leave the feature config under it’s own admin screen (find either way)
▪    I always use Path to define an alias of “login” for (site)/user. Login as the URL makes sense to people and they can remember it
▪    Get rid of Site Building and Site Config. No one really understands the distinction - you just gt used to where to find what you need but contrib modules are randomly placed. Think about tasks instead

Functionality

▪    It’d be nice to be easier to install language pack from core to modules (esp. Thai!)
▪    Node create and edit menu settings. The ability to set the weight of a menu item via the (existing) drag and drop interface but inline with the menu settings and node edit form before saving node
▪    Install modules, themes and updates through the UI
▪    In Drupal7 revisions should be allowed to be published in the future
▪    XML querying gate w module info
▪    Disable menu fieldset on content types that don’t need it. Also restrict menu locations
▪    Allow user registration using Open ID
▪    Widgets for user fields
▪    Add data types to CCK fields. This way integers and other data types won’t be sirted as strings
▪    Configurable node admin
▪    Smarty type var handling for themes
▪    After running update.php we land on a sreen with links to front or admin - why not just go to Front and probably save a click?
▪    WYSIWYG Theme Builder/Editor

Interface

▪    Fluid project accessible reorder widget instead of arbitrary drag & drop for menus
▪    Content entry screen improvements
▪    Sorting/Filtering
⁃    Improve the admin/content/node page? I often build a view to replace this page. Clients of mine need: Sort by title/type/etc. (by column), Show last updated date (how about a flexible way to choose columns to display) and created date, search/filter by keyword in the title
⁃    Streamline administering roles & permissions (eg. as an option, allow application of permissions on module config pages)
⁃    Allow configuration of all content type settings on single page as well as existing ‘per content types’ approach. eg comment setting, uploads, etc
⁃    Comment views or CCK for better sorting and control
▪    The date selection shouldn’t just be text
▪    Wordpress-like dashboard
▪    Modal dialogs for confirmations
▪    Warn users if they are about to navigate away from an unsaved node or block
▪    Make the UI drag & drop
▪    Increase admin text sizes across the board
▪    Do not get rid of the front end/administration integration
▪    My users want an EDIT button on everything
▪    Smaller /admin page

Search (as in the core search module)

▪ cannot exclude content types - need to, if you have ‘database table’ types that are just used in views but never directly displaced. [I think there's a contrib module that does this]
▪ need ability to add pages and index them, composite pages like views and panels

Accessibility

▪ Our .gov contracts are v interested in accessibility, particularly in the admin section (since so few CMS platforms have admin accessibility)
▪ Accessibility by default - WCAA 2.0

Additions to Core

▪    Core SSL Support
▪    Bring in token and image API into Core. Should be automatically available not just in separate modules.
▪    Views query builder in core, UI as module (views is a single point of failure, too much risk if there’s another views version lag like w/dg)
▪    Image in core content types
▪    Media and WYSIWYG in Core! OMG!
▪    Bring CCK UI into core to bring further consistency
▪    Views in core!

Help

▪    An easy to navigate learning area. Clearly separated sections: learn Drupal, modules / implement learning
▪    Contextual help
▪    Video tutorials in the help area (see Wordpress.tv)

Migration/Back Up/ Export

▪    An export module to make migrating a site to a new server/restored server easier
▪    Build in back up and restore utility for admins
▪    When upgrading an existing site, the site’s existing folder and settings should not be over-written
▪    Migration tools that allow easier moves and domain names eg. filesystem path

RDFa
Remove and replace all core themes except Garland
