Interview for a Northeastern Student

Hello all!

Not sure if I'm doing this correctly (new to the site...)

I'm currently doing a story for my journalism class @ Northeastern University about students who choose "alternative paths" after graduation. I was wondering if there were any recent grads out there who are currently working a Cool Works job (or have had one in the recent past) who would be willing to do a short phone interview with me. Please message me, or email me back if you are interested...your input would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks :)

Best,
Jackie

Information needed on Yellowstone/Grand Teton/Flagg Ranch

Wow lets see I have 8 years with Yellowstone. I worked at Flagg once and another resort in the Tetons. I will say nothing about Flagg simply because that was many years back. Only statement I will make is I will never consider them again. However others have had very good experiences with Flagg. As far as Yellowstone, as I usually say ya make it how you want it. like any place it is a company and they have there rules. if your into doing lots of things like hikes, camping nature travel Yellowstone is an awsome place to start. Think of a big college dorm!!!!!! Except instead of just kids in there late teens early twenties, it is on a grand scale with all different age groups. Anything in particular you want to know I am sure you will recieve lots of answers. There are a lot of us on here that have worked in Yellowstone and the Tetons. Both are absolutely gorgeous places and I personally highly recomend both parks. There are other locals in the Tetons as well.

When do you apply?

Speaking from an Alaska point of view we have already started accepting applications for our 2009 summer season. I would agree with Brenda that getting your application in early is a great start and to open a discussion with any of the hiring managers at the locations that you are interested in to get any questions answered that you might have.

spa jobs out west

I heard of a spa at Moonlight Basin Resort in Big Sky Montana that is hiring attendants, therapists, estheticians. Thinking of going out there from NY. No employee housing, but apartments listed on craigslist. Cheers

Backstories? How do you do it?

I feel that it is very important to use the KISS principle; "Keep it simple". With a laptop I can take care of almost all financial business online, including credit, banking, and even health insurance. W-2's are taken care of by calling the prior employer with my new address at the end of the year. I gave away or sold almost all of my possessions and found it helped "free" me because there is little to maintain, which also has the effect of saving me a lot of $$$.
Working in tipped positions can actually increase a person's income vs. decrease it, but an older person will generally have to adjust to the younger crowd and a very busy job. In 1999 I sold my catering company to work in Yellowstone through Coolworks.com and it is hard to give up this lifestyle. Although I get the urge to settle down on occasion, I quickly grow bored. There are so many beautiful and exciting places to see and people to meet that it is worth it to simplify and travel.
CJ mentions a fall back plan and that is crucial... I have had to "fall back" several times. When starting the season, bank your $$$ instead of spending it. Many of my friends simply use their connections made from the first couple of seasons; It is a very effective way to get immediate employment. Stay in touch with your new friends...
I hope this helps; Email me if you have any other questions.

When do you apply?

Some places start as early as December, January. Best to contact those places your looking to possably work at and discuss any questions you have directly with them or send off an email with your questions. It is also best that you send in your applications at the earliest possable date allowed because most place have thousands of applicants to go through.
