hi Laurice, my favourite ones are Americolour Gourmet Food Writers. they have the best ink and seem like they never run out. the nib is an "art" nib so it takes some practice but you can do fine line work or thicker work.

i HATE these terrible ones i bought called KopyKake. they are the WORST. dry-ish and inconsistent. plus the lids continuously fall off and are not secure. avoid these, avoid!!

i've used the Wilton markers too and they're ok and can do in a pinch but are definitely not my favourite.

Cupcake Madrid, i will look up Sugar Flair! :)

Cakespy paints mural at Cake Eater Bakery

This is so adorable, and we love to see our pals joining forces in the name of cupcakes! (and other desserts)

The soon-to-open (April 5th is the latest word) Minneapolis cupcake bakery Cake Eater Bakery (co-owned by Sheela Namakkal of Miel y Leche) was paid a visit by Jessie Oleson of Cakespy in order to paint a mural! Read all about it at Cakespy and we'll share news of Cake Eater's opening as soon as we have it. See this Cakespy Flickr set for more photos from her Minneapolis visit (where the photos below are taken from). You really must click through and see the art in its entirety (and in person, of course).

The Purple Cupcake Project for epilepsy awareness

I heard about The Purple Cupcake Project the other day via a Facebook posting by Atlanta cupcake bakery Sweet Pockets, who will be selling purple cupcakes from March 22-26th, and didn't realize it was part of a larger happening.

We'll be posting more about it, including more pretty purple cupcakes, but for now, here's some news from the official website of The Purple Cupcake Project:

Conceived by three smart cupcakes at The Anita Kaufmann Foundation (AKF), The Great Purple Cupcake Project is a sweet epilepsy awareness initiative supporting Purple Day (March 26th). During the week of March 26th, AKF is inviting bakeries and cupcakeries across the United States to feature PURPLE CUPCAKES in an effort to promote awareness of a condition that affects over 3 million Americans.

We'll provide you with the Purple Day swag and signage and you make the cupcakes. All we ask is that a portion of cupcake sales go back to Purple Day for epilepsy awareness (10% is suggested). In return, your shop and website will be listed on a dedicated page at both www.purpleday.org and www.akfus.org. We will also provide you with press materials to send out to the local media.

While these St. Patrick's Day cupcakes are no longer timely, they are still delicious-looking. They're by Madison, Wisconsin custom cupcake company Cupcakes-a-Go-Go, via Facebook, where they wrote:

We have a chocolate cupcake topped with creme de menthe ganache, kissed with mint cream cheese frosting, and a chocolate mint Oreo cupcake, also topped with our yummy mint cream cheese frosting. These are SO delicious! We will also be featuring our Guinness Stout chocolate cupcake with bourbon glaze this week!

The good thing about custom cupcake companies, though, is that you can email them at orders at cupcakes-a-go-go.com if you'd like to get some yourself.

I love love love this "Prom?" cupcake by Little Sweeties Cupcakes in Los Angeles (via Flickr). It's just too cute. You can find out more on Facebook and the Little Sweeties blog. They do small orders currently (email littlesweetiescupcakes at yahoo.com) and are looking to open a cupcake shop sometime in the future.

Yes, savory cupcakes, without any sugar, are possible, as proven by New York City's Kumquat Cupcakery. Though we prefer the sweet kind of cupcakes, there is room for savory cupcakes in this vast cupcake world.

From their blog:

got an email the other day from the fine folks at Deity Lounge asking about my cupcakes. Apparently they came across the bacon cupcakes at the flea and (of course) fell in love with them. The email was very sweet and seemed perfectly normal....until...."would you be able to make a few completely savory cupcakes for us?" Ummm, is this a cupcake related homework assignment? YES! I'm in, let's do this.

So yesterday I spent all morning surrounded by some of my favorite savory items (beer, potato chips, smoked salmon). I ended up creating 3 cakes with no sugar, and a frosting containing mostly goat cheese. My kitchen mates were more than a little excited about this new development.

Needless to say they were DELICIOUS, and I'm happy to announce that Deity Lounge will be selling them starting this Sunday at their party to introduce the new menu. I'll be there so definitely swing by and say hello!

I know St. Patrick's Day is over but we'll be doing some additional posts as there were so many wonderful cupcakes to celebrate - sorry we couldn't get to all of them in time for the holiday. Cupcake Shopping Break

Nathan Road in Tsim Sha Tsui is a great place to shop 'til you drop. But why drop when you can re-energize at Coco Coffee and Chocolate, the stylish dessert bar in the Mira Hotel?

When I stopped in they had six different flavors, three "traditional" and three "exotic". I went for the Pistachio Bliss, which was vanilla cake filled with and piled high with pistachio white chocolate mousse. The cake was dense and moist-almost a pound cake texture- and very good. The mousse was light, and not overwhelmingly sweet, although not very pistachio-y either. (They are served with a fork, which confused me at first but then made total sense- if you try to bite into these you will get mousse all over your face.) Overall I felt like I was indulging but also eating "real food", which you can't always say about cupcakes.

The other flavors that were available were:
Mango Margarita-Vanilla and Cointreau cake with mango and tequila mousse
Go-Berry-Blueberry cake with mango mousse
Asian Garden-Vanilla cake with jasmine mousse
Black Pearl- Black sesame cake with a crunchy chocolate heart (!!) and white chocolate mousse
Apple Cinnamon- Apple cinnamon cake with vanilla white chocolate mousse

The cupcakes are HK$32 each, about US$4, and with a cup of Coco's good strong coffee this break will set you back about US$10. This is a cute place to drop in with a girlfriend or on your own- and Kowloon Park is right across the street (and has a nice aviary) if you'd like to walk it off right away.
