As I mentioned last time I wrote about my adventures on Intrade, I’m sceptical of the claim, a special case of the (semi-strong version of the) Efficient Markets Hypothesis, that the odds in betting markets provide the best estimate of the probability of political outcomes. I managed to double my small stake betting on Newt Gingrich, and might have made more if I had not overestimated the efficiency with which the Republican electorate processes information. I sold on the news of his work for Fannie Mae, and thereby missed the peak of the market when he won South Carolina.

Having made my point and learned a bit about the practical operation of markets, I meant to cash out my winnings, but that turned out to be a complicated process, and I couldn’t resist another flutter. Rick Santorum was trading at 100-1, and while I didn’t think much of his chances, those are pretty good odds in a four-horse race, especially one with no particularly attractive candidates.

He’s now 17.9 per cent (nearly 4-1 in the old language, if I recall it correctly), so I’ve now made a pretty substantial gain. There’s a bit of a cognitive consistency problem here – I didn’t really mean to make money backing Santorum, so now I need some suggestions as to an appropriate use for the money, one which would offset any damage done by backing him when he was down where he belonged. Orientation can be US, Australian or global.

RIP: Jeffrey Zaslow, at 53

RIP: Jeffrey Zaslow, a journalist, columnist, and author best known for his work with Gabby Giffords and Capt. Sully Sullenberger, was killed in a car crash in northern Michigan.

He was 53.

Zaslow apparently lost control of his vehicle while driving along the snow-covered M-32 near Elmira Township, Michigan, and collided with an oncoming semi. The truck driver’s condition is unknown.

The Philadelphia-born, West Bloomfield-based father of three co-authored several memoirs, including Capt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger’s Highest Duty: My Search for What Really Matters, and, more recently, Gabrielle Giffords and Capt. Mark Kelly’s Gabby: A Story of Courage and Hope.

Zaslow began his career writing for the Orlando Sentinel‘s Florida magazine. He then moved on to write for the Wall Street Journal, where a story about a competition to replace advice columnist Ann Landers at the Chicago Sun-Times helped him land the gig.

He eventually returned to the Wall Street Journal, where he had been writing a column about relationships and life transitions called “Moving On.”

Zaslow is survived by his wife, Fox 2 Detroit news anchor Sherry Margolis, and their three daughters, Jordan, Alex, and Eden.

Roseanne Reunion of the Day: John Goodman is reportedly one dotted t away from signing on to reunite with Roseanne Barr for a new sitcom called Downwardly Mobile.

Deadline says the former Roseanne star is in “final negotiations” to co-lead the series co-created by Barr, her boyfriend John Argent, and former Roseanne executive producer Eric Gilliland.

The show itself involves a mobile home park proprietor (Barr) who plays “surrogate mother” to its residents. Goodman is set to play a park employee who has a “buddy relationship” with Barr.

If Downwardly Mobile gets picked up, it will air on NBC.

What are you guys doing for Fashion Week this weekend just kiddddding?! Seriously, though, Fashion Week is silly and fashion is probably the most morally offensive of the aesthetic arts (although maybe also the most pure somehow? Or is that abstract painting?). BUT, speaking of fashion, if you don’t have anything going on this weekend, or even just a spare hour and a half at some point, can I recommend watching the documentary Paris Is Burning? It’s amazing. It’s about these drag queen fashion balls in New York in the late ’80s but it’s not just, like, who wears the fanciest dress, they also dress like business people, and students, and street thugs. Oh, and everyone is in a “house” which is like a gay street fashion gang, and each house has a “mother” and everyone else is a “child” of the “house” and they “throw shade” on children from the other houses. I know this documentary is kind of a classic, so forgive me if it’s old news to you, but if you haven’t seen it then get ready for a real treat. See you Monday, gurrrrrrl.

Hey, want to guess how Rick Santorum responded to the news that the Pentagon is easing some gender restrictions for women in combat, opening up nearly 14,000 of the 250,000 positions they’re currently unable to obtain or advance to? Oh and also wanna guess how he feels about opening up any more of those positions? Great! I’ll wait.

BOOM! Didja guess he was going to be a crazy ignorant garbage monster about it? Did you also guess that he clarified this statement by saying he meant “men’s emotional issues, not women,” meaning that he’s worried that men will protect the women rather than fight the bad guys? That they, “may be more concerned with protecting someone who may be in a vulnerable position, a woman in a vulnerable position.” CAN YOU EVEN BELIEVE IT? At this point, cataloging all of the ridiculous hateful nonsense that has come out of Rick Santorum’s mouth seems even a little unnecessary. I mean, of course it isn’t, because he is still a monster running for President of the United States of America, and maybe we should be cataloging it more, actually?, but I mean HOLY COW is this guy is just a straight-up dumb asshole!
