Esta semana tuvimos la oportunidad de asistir a una presentación, en la Escuela de Diseño Industrial de Pratt Institute y conversar con Paul Rowan, co-fundador de UMBRA. La conocida empresa canadiense, con base en la ciudad de Toronto, que ha comenzado en los último años a establacer vínculos importantes con algunas escuelas de diseño en todo el mundo y particularmente en Usa. Les Mandelbaum and Paul Rowan son los fundadores de la marca UMBRA. Una empresa que nació en 1979 gracias a la amistad de estos dos canadienses. “Si quieres hacer una empresa, lo mejor es conseguir rapidamente un buen socio”, comenzó diciendo Paul en su presentación. Rowan es diseñador gráfico y quien lidera y coordina los equipos de diseño de Umbra ltd. en Canadá, USA, Europa, Hong Kong y China. Mandelbaum es formado en música y psicología y comenzó su carrera en los negocios con una exitosa firma de accesorios para sonido y altavoces. Comenzaron hace 30 años con el diseño de una pequeña pieza gráfica que podía servir de parabán y que presentaron en la feria Chicago Housewares Show en USA, para luego volver a Canadá y crear esta marca que en latín significa sombra. Dragón Chino

Justo veintitrés días después de comenzar el nuestro, desde el pasado 23 de enero y hasta el próximo 9 de febrero de 2013, estaremos disfrutando del nuevo año chino, el que corresponde al número 4079, año bajo el signo del Dragón.

A diferencia del calendario que utilizamos en occidente (el conocido como calendario Gregoriano), el chino es un calendario lunisolar basado en las diferentes fases de la Luna y los movimientos del Sol, y es utilizado en prácticamente toda Asia.

Instaurado casi dos milenios antes de Cristo, se compone de doce meses a los que se puede añadir un decimotercero para conseguir que el solsticio de invierno caiga regularmente en el mes número once. Así el año siguiente comenzará siempre en la primera Luna Nueva después de este solsticio de invierno.

Específicamente bajo el signo del Dragón de Agua, este año disfruta de uno de los iconos más importantes de la cultura china, apreciadísimo por su simbología, interpretado y estampado en cualquier parte u objeto, y que hace que la tan controlada natalidad del país se dispare en los años “Dragón” porque parecen prometer que el recién nacido será afortunado a lo largo de su vida. Por cierto, me permito un pequeño inciso personal, para agradecer a mis padres (quienes no tienen nada de chino) que me programasen para un año de esos, pues el dragón es mi signo zodiacal chino...

Etimológicamente la palabra dragón deriva del latín dracon (serpiente), que a su vez tenía como origen el término griego que significa “aguda visión de futuro”. Identificado con la buena suerte y la sabiduría milenaria, este animal mitológico se asocia con la energía devastadora de la Tierra, y al ser en esta ocasión emparejado con el agua, a las fuertes corrientes, mareas, tempestades o tsunamis.

Y aquí es donde quiero llegar.

En moda, China se está convirtiendo en un tsunami.

Una ola gigantesca que se lo está bebiendo todo a su paso. No voy a mencionar las tiendas multiprecio que encuentras casi en cada esquina y en las que descubres cosas al más puro estilo Ali-Baba sin los cuarenta que siguen.

Me refiero a la muy potente mano de obra ínfimamente remunerada que hace que muchas de las grandes marcas produzcan sus creaciones en China.

Quiero recordarte la invasión de estas mismas marcas en territorio chino (soy testigo de inauguraciones de tiendas en Shanghai y he visto una cantidad enorme de otras por doquier en Beijing).

Y quiero hacer alusión también a la tremenda cantidad de nuevos ricos chinos que se están convirtiendo en los clientes número uno del lujo (por encima de americanos, japoneses y árabes), y que están arrasando allí donde van. En París, las dependientas de tiendas de lujo aprenden chino a marchas forzadas o se contratan intérpretes en temporada de rebajas.

Y por descontado, voy a mencionar la deliciosa proliferación de belleza china en las pasarelas internacionales. Al tirón del mercado asiático se han añadido modelos japonesas, coreanas o vietnamitas, pero lo más alto del podium lo ocupan las modelos chinas.

La tendencia en modelling siempre es pasajera, como bien lo demuestran las idas y venidas de rostros que marcan una temporada para desaparecer más tarde, pero la multiculturalidad y diversidad racial, y sobretodo el hecho de necesitar vender al importante mercado del dragón han ocasionado el querer buscar ese lado exótico y diferentemente fascinante de la belleza asiática. Campañas multinacionales de cosmética (Estée Lauder), revistas trendy que dedican doce portadas diferentes a la mujer china (i-D) y desfiles de Alta Costura (Givenchy) dedicados en exclusiva a modelos orientales lo demuestran.

Mujeres como Du Juan, Mo Wandan o Xin Li empezaron a darse a conocer en la profesión durante la pasada década, abriendo camino para las que han llegado después.

No puedes no haber visto los rostros de Liu Wen, Fei Fei Sun, Sui He, Ming Xi o Shu Pei.

Y no vas a poder dejar de ver los rostros de todas las demás, esas “new faces” que ya empiezan a invadir la prensa especializada.

Por cierto, otra de las interesantes y más que apropiadas actualmente simbologías del dragón en la cultura china es el hecho de ser un buen augurio de alteraciones del orden, un volver a empezar que anuncia cambios pero que muy positivos. Seamos positivos y hagámosles caso.

Quinn Norton's first-person account of the police raid on Occupy DC for Wired is riveting and scary. The Occupy camp that was demolished was riven by a deep disagreement on tactics and politics, and the police raid was a dramatic change from the good relations the camp had enjoyed with local law enforcement.

Screams of anger, panic, and pain began to cut through the grey air, and I managed to get back into the crowd a bit, away from the police. In the midst of the pressed and screaming crowd I saw two occupiers, Mo and Georgia, find each other, and hug. They stayed there, oblivious to the cacophony around them, both their eyes glassy and vacant and a little too wide open.

I grabbed a woman I recognized from the info tent and pointed to them. “Get them out of here,” I told her. She just looked at me for a moment in the chaos, and I repeated, “Get them the fuck out of here.” She nodded and grabbed them, still hugging. I spun around, and the riot line was on me. Pushed from every direction, I tripped over something behind me which turned out to be a person on the ground. The officer in front of me screamed “Move back!” but other people were falling on the fallen, and there was no way to move back without trampling them, and no way to stay without being trampled.

Peter Sunde, the notorious and entrepreneurial "brokep" who co-founded the Pirate Bay, writes in Wired about his view on the entertainment industry's corruption and the cluelessness of the lawmakers who side with them: "Evidently, Warner Brothers felt that the investigation was taking too long. The studio contacted the police officer in charge of the investigation (one person that worked mostly by himself) and before I had even been questioned by him, he interviewed for a job with Warner Brothers."

Super Mario Converse, low-top editions

Converse will release two different styles of Super Mario low-top in Japan in March 2012 -- I like the overall look, though I think I'd prefer them in canvas over leather.

It comes in a black and a white premium leather version, with the Converse star logo being replaced with the star icon from the iconic video game. Furthermore the colors of the sneaker have been adapted to the signature colors of the Super Mario character and the Super Mario Bros., Mario and Luigi, are printed on the heel of the sneakers.

If a feature or product were legitimately easy the user would not be writing in to support about how stuck they are. Sure, some percentage of users will find questions to ask about any interface. But do you want to start the conversation by assuming the user falls into that percentage? You venture to learn much more if you assume the software is wrong, not the user.

Here’s a little update on these insane Eternal 811s worn by superfuture’s ah_long. The vertical fading and massive contrast is just unreal. It’s a unique look only found only in the Flat Head 3xxx denim and this denim used by Eternal (apparently, the two denims come from the same mill). 14.5 oz. unsanforized, unsinged, and uncalendered. The wear and construction of these jeans is truly a sight to see.
