For generations each of these performances has been studied and savored primarily for the cornet passages (check that intro to "Borneo"!) and for Trumbauer's gentle handling of the C melody saxophone. During this period, most of Trumbauer's records were decorated with vocal passages of sometimes laughably puerile quality, as heard here on "Lila" and "Our Bungalow of Dreams." This anonymous vocalist, a staunch advocate of the "gee-whiz" style of singing, hid behind the pseudonym of Noel Taylor, used by the OKeh company to camouflage their sometimes questionable talent. Other singers include Scrappy Lambert, a cottony specimen by the name of Charles Gaylord, Smith Ballew, and Trumbauer himself. Be advised that "Bless You! Sister," "Dusky Stevedore," and "Take Your Tomorrow" are each thickly larded with Jim Crow racial stereotyping, as white men in audio-blackface carry on in minstrel show fashion. Ethically speaking, together with Lambert's assessment of "bamboo babies" on "Borneo," this is a low point in the Trumbauer story, even if "Take Your Tomorrow" does contain some measure of humorous theatrical timing. What endears lovers of early jazz to this spotty body of works is the presence of Bix Beiderbecke and guitarist Eddie Lang. Recorded on April 30, 1929, "I Like That," Bix and Tram's last recorded collaboration, is rosy and uplifting. Despite the absence of Bix on the remaining tracks, the positive vibrations continue and before you know it violinist Matty Malneck has been replaced by the inventive Joe Venuti. The temptation to dabble in such waters as disco, funk, and rock was a risky proposition: pull it off and you were a genius, fail and you were the laughing stock of the industry. Falling somewhere in the large grey area between those two poles, the Brecker Brothers started the decade with Straphangin', a seven-song excursion into all sorts of fusion and AOR-like territories. No doubt taking sonic cues from Spyro Gyra and Steely Dan, the guys open the album with the mellow title track and the equally suggestive "Threesome" before stepping things up with the highly percussive "Bathsheba." "Why Can't I Be There" could easily find its way onto the playlist of a soft rock fan, but on the whole Straphangin' is a mixed blessing. Like many westerners, I only became aware of Kayhan Kalhor and the group generally known as Ghazal, when their album &#8220;The Rain&#8221; was released by ECM. This set of two CDs, released in 1997 and 1998, proves that Kayhan Kalhor and his co-musicans have been making wonderful music well before the ECM release in 2003.&lt;div class="feedflare"&gt;

Em se tratando apenas de cinema &#8211; independente de ter jazz na trilha ou n&#227;o &#8211; &#233; imposs&#237;vel n&#227;o citar o protagonismo da influ&#234;ncia americana: partindo dos mudos de Charles Chaplin, passando pelo noir de Orson Welles, os suspenses de Alfred Hitchcock... enfim, at&#233; chegarmos aos mais &#8220;ecl&#233;ticos&#8221; e &#8220;comerciais&#8221; como Brian De Palma, Robert Altman, David Lynch, Stanley Kubrick, Martin Scorcese, Steven Spielberg, Clint Eastwood...tamb&#233;m gosto muito dos dramas de Woody Allen (onde a neurose e com&#233;dia s&#227;o trabalhadas com extrema intelig&#234;ncia) e tamb&#233;m adoro os filmes de Tim Burton, um mestre da fantasia e dos contos sombrios (uma esp&#233;cie de Edgar Allan Poe do cinema, convenhamos). Contudo, quando se trata de &#8220;estudar cinema&#8221; &#8211; e n&#227;o estou falando no estudo de &#226;mbito acad&#234;mico, mas sim das descompromissadas reflex&#245;es e observ&#226;ncias que todo cin&#233;filo tem o direito e prazer de faz&#234;-las &#8211;, me parece que n&#227;o h&#225; nada mais conceitual e instigante do que o cinema europeu &#8211; especialmente o franc&#234;s e o italiano. Mas o cinema franc&#234;s, por exemplo, &#233; um enorme celeiro de produ&#231;&#245;es interessantes onde v&#225;rios solos de jazz &#8211; do bebop ao avant-garde &#8211; j&#225; apareceram como trilhas frequentes de filmes que, j&#225; de imediato ou posteriormente, passaram a ser considerados cults e cl&#225;ssicos eternos do cinema europeu. Se al&#233;m de gostar de jazz, voc&#234; tamb&#233;m preza por um cinema mais art&#237;stico, cheio de indaga&#231;&#245;es, pol&#234;micas e reflex&#245;es, o melhor &#233; que, em alguns casos , a trilha jazzistica lhe surgir&#225; apenas como um &#8220;tempeiro a mais&#8221; em filmes que, conceitualmentes, j&#225; s&#227;o por si s&#243; instigantes, reflexivos e at&#233; transgressores: como alguns filmes do cineasta Louis Malle, por exemplo. Quem ainda n&#227;o assistiu Um sopro no Cora&#231;&#227;o (1971), onde new orleans jazz de Sidney Bechet e o bebop estonteante de Dizzy Gillespie e Charlie Parker fazem fundo para uma tem&#225;tica deveras pol&#234;mica: que &#233; o incesto entre m&#227;e e filho? Poiz&#233;, Um sopro no Cora&#231;&#227;o, assim como o cool Ascensor para o cadafalso(1958), que tem a trilha assinada por Miles Davis, foi dirigido pelo invetarado Louis Malle, diretor que viveu &#224; margem do movimento Nouvelle.

J&#225; em "Round Midnight: Por Volta da Meia-Noite" (1978), dirigido por Bertrand Tavernier e com trilha sonora assinada por Herbie Hancock, o bebopper Dexter Gordon aparece n&#227;o s&#243; como m&#250;sico, mas como o ator principal num drama ambientada no in&#237;cio da d&#233;cada de 50, &#233;poca do bebop e cool jazz. A hist&#243;ria, escrita pelo escritor franc&#234;s Francis Paudras &#8211; que fora amigo e protetor do pianista Bud Powell em seus tristes dias de ex&#237;lio em Paris &#8211; &#233; inspirada nas vidas dram&#225;ticas do saxtenorista Lester Young e do pr&#243;prio Bud Powell. Round Midnight se tornou, de imediato, o maior cl&#225;ssico do cinema mundial inspirado totalmente no Jazz &#8211; sem contar que Dexter Gordon foi nomeado o Oscar de Melhor Ator e Herbie Hancock ganhou o pr&#234;mio de Melhor Trilha Sonora Original.

&lt;br /&gt;Igualmente interessante &#233; o uso do jazz de aspecto mais vanguardista em alguns filmes franceses. Em Un Et&#233; Sauvage (1970), o cineasta Marcel Camus &#8211; que em 1959 j&#225; havia filmado Orfeu Negro, inspirado na pe&#231;a de teatro Orfeu da Concei&#231;&#227;o de Vinicius de Moraes ( e com m&#250;sica de Tom Jobim) &#8211; escalou o alto&#237;sta Marion Brown para compor uma trilha sonora que fizesse jus ao t&#237;tulo e &#224; hist&#243;ria de um gar&#231;om que vive entre o mundo dos hippies e artistas de ruas e o mundo de ricos e poderosos, j&#225; que ele &#233; seduzido por uma t&#237;pica madame rica para fomentar os desejos do marido voyeurista &#8211; da&#237; que o free jazz de Marion Brown, gravado para esse filme e lan&#231;ado em disco sob o t&#237;tulo de Le Temps Fou, chega a ter uma roupagem um tanto &#8220;psicod&#233;lica&#8221;, ainda que, afora o piano el&#233;trico, os instrumentos usados sejam todos ac&#250;sticos. J&#225; para Les Stances &#224; Sophie (1970), o diretor israelense Mosh&#233; Mizrahi encomenda a trilha aos m&#250;sicos do magn&#237;fico Art Ensemble of Chicago e &#224; cantora de soul Fontella Bass, na &#233;poca esposa do trompetista Lester Bowie. Les Stances &#224; Sophie, apesar de dirigido por um israelense, &#233; tamb&#233;m um filme cult que representa a Nouvelle Vague, j&#225; que o pr&#243;prio Mizrahi, al&#233;m de radicado na Fran&#231;a na &#233;poca, tamb&#233;m era antenado com a est&#233;tica desse movimento. A prop&#243;sito, LP, CD e DVD foram reeditados e relan&#231;ados recentemente pela gravadora Soul Jazz Records: o disco Les Stances &#224; Sophie do Art Ensemble of Chicaco &#233; considerado um cl&#225;ssico da segunda fase do free jazz por sua not&#225;vel distin&#231;&#227;o, a qual consiste numa pegada mais soul e funk ascrecentada ao som vanguardista da banda, al&#233;m de pitadas da influ&#234;ncia parisiense &#8211; lembrando, ali&#225;s, que nessa &#233;poca n&#227;o s&#243; Lester Bowie e seus companheiros do Art Ensemble of Chicago estavam &#8220;exilados&#8221; na Fran&#231;a, mas v&#225;rios outros m&#250;sicos do free jazz norte-americano tais como Cecil Taylor, Steve Lacy, Archie Shepp e Ornette Coleman sa&#237;ram dos EUA para explorar o mercado europeu, onde eles tinham, de fato, espa&#231;os para apresentar um som mais puramente art&#237;stico e experimentalista.

&lt;br /&gt;Ent&#227;o, a&#237; est&#227;o algumas dicas resultadas da minha aprecia&#231;&#227;o ao cinema franc&#234;s: Louis Malle, Roger Vadim, Bertrand Tavernier, Marcel Camus e Mosh&#233; Mizrahi s&#243; foram alguns, dentre tantos, diretores que usaram o jazz como trilha de seus filmes. Para quem ainda n&#227;o est&#225; familiarizado com esse tipo de cinema, imagine a combina&#231;&#227;o das r&#250;sticas paisagens das vilas parisienses e seus velhos pr&#233;dios barrocos, seus &#8220;club du jazz&#8221; ou suas lojas de discos com as paisagens mais rom&#226;nticas de jardins, parques, obras de arte e hot&#233;is de luxo, al&#233;m de um toque puro de lirismo, moralismo e romantismo em conflito com a podrid&#227;o pecaminosa escondida entre os finos vestidos e palet&#243;s da alta burguesia, bem como os lampejos de movimentos sociais, art&#237;sticos e filos&#243;ficos tais como o feminismo, e a libera&#231;&#227;o sexual de uma juventude rebelde e, ent&#227;o, d&#225; pra se ter mais ou menos a no&#231;&#227;o do clima nost&#225;lgico e realista de tais filmes &#8211; especialmente em filmes que caracterizaram a nouvelle vague dos anos 60 e 70, movimento contestat&#243;rio da burguesia e dos valores morais levado a cabo por um grupo jovens cineastas &#8211; dentre os quais Louis Malle, Roger Vadim e Marcel Camus &#8211; que obviamente n&#227;o tinham muita grana nem tantos incentivos financeiros pra realizar suas filmagens. N&#227;o por acaso, em 1968 os jovens franceses protagonizaram uma das maiores revolu&#231;&#245;es culturais que o mundo j&#225; documentou: a Revolu&#231;&#227;o de 1968 concretizou a liberdade de express&#227;o de uma juventude que desde meados dos anos 50, com o advento do rock&#8217;n&#8217;roll americano, j&#225; vinha aspirando ter uma maior participa&#231;&#227;o da sociedade; mas muito mais do que isso, a Revolu&#231;&#227;o de 1968 foi uma revolu&#231;&#227;o repentina e globalizada que, j&#225; de in&#237;cio, passou a ser um marco, um ponto de partida para outros movimentos, acontecimentos e transforma&#231;&#245;es sociais como os movimentos ecologistas, a efetiva explos&#227;o do feminismo, o surgimento organiza&#231;&#245;es n&#227;o-governamentais (ONGs), os protestos sociais em defesa das minorias e dos direitos humanos, bem como os protestos contra as pol&#237;ticas da Guerra Fria, contra guerras regionais e ocupa&#231;&#245;es colonialistas (como a Guerra do Vietnam, por exemplo). Ali&#225;s, a Revolu&#231;&#227;o de 1968 n&#227;o s&#243; chegou a ser entendida como uma extens&#227;o dos movimentos sociais americanos da d&#233;cada de 60 &#8211; dentre as quais a luta de Martin Luther King em favor dos direitos civis dos negros e os protestos contra a Guerra do Vietn&#227; &#8211; como tamb&#233;m influenciaria, de volta, os movimentos ocorridos nos EUA e no resto do mundo a partir daquela data. E o jazz, assim como o rock&#8217;n&#8217;roll e o cinema, foram elementos art&#237;sticos essenciais para a forma&#231;&#227;o do novo pensamento de mundo instaurado por aquela nova juventude. Opci&#243;n - " tiene una calidad aireada y despreocupada"&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt;El baterista Motian ha montado una formaci&#243;n de pesos pesado para este &#225;lbum de baladas est&#225;ndar (al principio grabado en 1989). Joe Lovano es la verdadera estrella de la sesi&#243;n, proporcionando m&#225;s evidencia de su ascenso como el hombre del tenor del momento. El guitarrista Bill Frisell proporciona la contribuci&#243;n m&#225;s estil&#237;sticamente distintiva a la banda, impidi&#233;ndole convertirse en un &#225;lbum bebop. Charlie Haden y Motian (como siempre) proporcionan un apoyo impecable, discreto.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt;Aunque Motian sea el l&#237;der de la sesi&#243;n, &#233;l s&#243;lo realmente se muestra en el primer plano en la primera pista donde proporciona la intro y coda y toma el primer solo. El solo de Lovano en esta versi&#243;n de ritmo r&#225;pida de "Liza" es una magistral ejecuci&#243;n bebop. &#201;l logra llevar a cabo el truco de parecer r&#225;pido, muscular y realmente conducir la banda, pero al mismo tiempo hacerlo parecer todo f&#225;cil. Inmediatamente, Frisell toma un acercamiento diferente, dejando m&#225;s espacio y alej&#225;ndose de la pura lengua bebop.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt;Haden realiza una interpretaci&#243;n delicada pero deliciosa de "Somewhere Over The Rainbow", un verdadero toque de luz del &#225;lbum.  El acompa&#241;amiento de estilo arm&#243;nico con el pedal de acero de Frisell, crea un tel&#243;n ideal para la ejecuci&#243;n pensativa y l&#237;rica de la balada por Lovano. &#201;l, con gusto, controla su ataque con el pedal de volumen para hacer aparecer voces que permiten evitar los obvios cambios de acorde. Frisell deja a Lovano todo el espacio para llevar por el aire a trav&#233;s de ricas armon&#237;as con su tono liviano, mullido, profundo y rico en el registro inferior, y maravillosamente fr&#225;gil en el superior. La entrada de Motian aqu&#237; es escasa y serena, &#233;l apenas est&#225; all&#237;. Es exactamente este tipo de ejecuci&#243;n musical pensativa, en que est&#225; basada su reputaci&#243;n.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt;"What Is This Thing Called Love" abre en formato de tr&#237;o con la interpretaci&#243;n oblicua, minimizada de Frisell de la melod&#237;a y acordes caracter&#237;sticamente extra&#241;os. Lovano participa en el primer solo que otra vez muestra su sedosa fluidez, mientras teje extensas l&#237;neas expresivas a trav&#233;s de la armon&#237;a. El cantarino bajo de Haden toma el siguiente coro, mientras que lamentablemente no encontramos ning&#250;n inter&#233;s mel&#243;dico que valga la pena. Lovano toca el encabezado en el camino hacia el final. Esta es la clase de final que lo deja queriendo m&#225;s.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt;Se trata esencialmente de un &#225;lbum para conocedores, probablemente demasiado sutil para atraer a nadie, pero si para el fan&#225;tico del jazz hardcore. Habiendo dicho que, no hay nada de amenazas o estent&#243;reo aqu&#237; que pudiera ofender la sensibilidad de alguien. El problema es, sospecho, que la mayor&#237;a de la gente fuera de los especialistas de jazz, encontrar&#237;a el humor del &#225;lbum como introspectivo, oto&#241;al y triste. Sin embargo, esta es la qu&#237;mica entre la inmersi&#243;n de Lovano en la lengua de jazz y el estilo de Frisell (que tiene sus influencias m&#225;s fuera del jazz) lo que hace este &#225;lbum. Comenz&#243; a estudiar arquitectura, pero lo dej&#243; a los 19 a&#241;os para convertirse en modelo, a pesar de que no le hac&#237;a falta por ser la heredera de una gran fortuna. Desfil&#243; para las firmas m&#225;s importantes de Alta costura y puso fin a su carrera de modelo en 1997.
