Uno is a basic, light-weight text editor for Mac: it has almost all the base functions you would expect from an editor like TextEdit. Indeed you’ll find it has fewer functions than TextEdit because it is designed to work only with text in the simplest way: starting from a blank window you can do practically anything with your characters. As it is a pure text editor it doesn’t work with images or photos you’d like to put in your text. It does open Rich Text Format files (.rtf) and Unicode-formatted Plain Text files (.txt): it saves both as .rtf and exports as Plain text.

Note for Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard users: although this is a Universal app, it has not been tested carefully on Leopard, and thus it could run with some issues.

Wine has always been popular among Linux users for running Windows programs, but Wine is available for Mac, too-and now, free utility WineBottler can "bottle" Windows programs into separate application bundles that run as standalone Mac apps.

In other words, WineBottler is a tool similar to codeweavers Crossover, where separate prefixes are created per app. However, WineBottler 'wraps' or 'bottles' the separate prefixes in an application bundle. WineBottler allows standalone (i.e. not requiring wine to be installed) applications to be created as well, by including the wine bundle inside the standalone application bundle.

Amazon Takes Aim At Apple’s Expensive iPad In New Kindle Ad

Whether Samsung’s blatant Apple bashing adverts are actually convincing customers to buy its products is unclear, but they are at least inspiring other companies to mock Apple’s gadgets in their own ads.

Amazion is the latest, with a new Kindle ad that takes aim at the iPad for its poor reading conditions in direct sunlight, and its heavy price tag.

Amazon has actually poked fun at the struggle iPad users face when trying to use their device in the sun in previous commercials. But its latest also goes after iPad prices, which, as the ad highlights would get you two Kindle Fire tablets and a Kindle e-reader instead.

There’s no denying that the Kindle Fire’s $199 price tag is attractive, but I’m sure most would argue that price isn’t the only factor to consider when purchasing a new tablet; the user experience also has to be taken into account.

iPad is a nuisance for many Chinese parents

A report from the Beijing Evening News suggests Chinese parents are scuffling with their kids over iPads. It seems the iPad was the gift of choice for many children this past Chinese New Year, and now those youngsters are having a hard time putting their tablets aside. Exasperated parents don't know what to do when their tots refuse to hand over the iPad, and they're afraid iPad use may impede their children's education.

It may seem silly to non-parents, but as a parent myself, I can confirm this report. My kids are enthralled with the iPad. They will creep into a corner, turn down the volume and play games. They will even sneak the iPad to bed and ~~read~~ play games under the covers.

Instead of fighting against the machine, parents should consider embracing the iPad. Get an OtterBox case, disable Wi-Fi, and set up a password so you can restrict access to the device. Remove the time-waster type games and fill the iPad with learning apps. You may discover this system gives you the ideal balance; the kids get their iPad fix, and you can rest easy knowing their use is solely educational.

How To Set Up Super Quick Web Searches In Alfred [OS X Tip]

The latest update to Alfred adds a selection of smart new features, one of which is a new way of grabbing selected text from any Mac app and pushing it straight into one of your other Alfred actions – such as a web search, for example.

It’s a cool little feature but a little hard to find, so here’s how to set it up. You’ll need to have paid for the Alfred Powerpack to make it work.

In Alfred’s preferences, go to Hotkeys and click the little plus symbol at the bottom-right. In the list that appears, click General, then Show Alfred (as shown above).

Now you’ll be able to configure an alternative way of invoking the Alfred command window.

At the top, you can choose a keyboard combo. I usually call up Alfred with Command+Space, so for this alternative I’ve set up Shift+Command+Space.

This grabs whatever text I’ve selected and puts it into Alfred. The other options below the key combo setting allow you to add a keyword in front – in my case, I’ve used the letter ‘l’, which is already set up inside Alfred as a shortcut to Google’s “I’m Feeling Lucky”.

Result? I can select text anywhere, hit four keys in rapid succession, and see the top Google result. (Which, despite Google’s flaws in other areas, is still almost always the one I want.)

Chutzpah: Google also wants 2.25% of every iPhone sale

It took a Techmeme news cycle for the import of Google's (GOOG) letter to the IEEE -- the nonprofit organization that sets technical standards for everything from AC/DC converters to Wi-Fi networks -- to sink in.

Early reports praised the company for joining Apple (AAPL) and Microsoft (MSFT) in their calls for adherence to the "fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory" licensing terms that IEEE members promise to honor when they submit their patented technology for consideration as an industry standard.

It wasn't until FOSS Patents' Florian Mueller got his hands on the text and spotted the telling third paragraph that the tone of the news coverage changed. The paragraph states, in language it describes as "irrevocable," that when Google is through buying Motorola (MOT) and its 17,000 patents, it is prepared to ask for the same "maximum per-unit royalty of 2.25%" that Motorola is demanding of Apple for every iPhone sale

Apple has complained in European courts that Motorola's demand is unfair, unreasonable and totally discriminatory.

Mueller agrees. "2.25% of the selling price of the product as a whole," he wrote, "is absolutely out of step with the concept of FRAND and with industry practice."

To outsiders, 2.25% may not seem like a lot, but consider this: The online database maintained by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute lists 4,956 standards covering 117,964 patents filed by 175 companies. If each of them demanded 2.25% every time a competitor tried to build a compatible device, the industry would grind to a halt.

One can only imagine what Steve Jobs would say to Google's latest gambit. The proprietary technology he felt Google had "stolen" (his word) from Apple to build Android was original work, and not something Apple had asked to be made an industry standard. To try to create an equivalence with so-called essential patents -- at least one of which dates back to the age of the pager -- that Motorola promised at the time to share fairly with all comers may be the modern definition of chutzpah.

UPDATE: Pando Daily's MG Siegler reminds us what David Drummond, Google's chief legal counsel, wrote last August, before the Motorola acquisition plan was announced. In a blog post entitled "When patents attack Android," he took a firm, principled stance against per-unit royalty fees:

A smartphone might involve as many as 250,000 (largely questionable) patent claims, and our competitors want to impose a "tax" for these dubious patents that makes Android devices more expensive for consumers. They want to make it harder for manufacturers to sell Android devices. Instead of competing by building new features or devices, they are fighting through litigation.

Apple shows interest in European patent laws

Apple has delivered a letter to the European Telecommunications Standards Institute asking for basic principles for that region of the world on patents and their licensing, according to the Wall Street Journal. The letter asks for consistency across the board in how patents are owned and shared, and it also asks for specific rates to be set on possible patent royalties for everyone to follow.

As smartphones and other mobile technology continue to develop and grow, patents on the many components are becoming increasingly more important, both in terms of determining ownership for the research and work put into development and for the licensing fees afforded to those with high profile patents. Apple obviously has good reason to see standards in this area, given how well-heeled it happens to be in the world of patents and innovations.

We'll have to wait and see if the board decides to set up a program of standards as Apple suggests. Even if the board agrees to set standards for these things, it could be a long time before those standards are actually decided on and published.
