Infographic Critique: Iceland is Out of Orbit

iceland.jpg
A Junk Charts reader tipped us about this chart that appeared on the front page of one of their newspapers. It announced: "Iceland banks are in a universe of hurt".

As we all know, Iceland is bankrupt, and all its banks are spinning out of orbit. But is this outer-space concept successful in portraying the story? We think not.

Broke and Broken

That the Dow Jones Industrial Average and Standard & Poor's 500 kept falling Thursday, down to their lowest levels since when Britney Spears was svelte, is no longer news.

The news is simply that the bag of tricks upon which regulators, traders, and assorted smart money relied for so long is truly empty. The last hour of trading took investors further into the economic sinkhole as grim forecasts and plunging oil prices gripped Wall Street.

What didn't work today was strong-arming on Capitol Hill as guerilla bands from both parties tried to push through a federal bailout of the auto industry. News that it was close to happening actually lifted the Dow to triple-digit gains early in the day, a flash that quickly became a memory as Democratic leadership put the brakes on.

What also didn't work was Prince Alwaleed bin Talal's grandstanding buy of Citigroup shares. Long known as being among the smartest of the smart money, the Saudi billionaire can now join Warren Buffett, G.E. boss Jeff Immelt, and countless others who are bottom feeding before Wall Street has found its bottom.

His  Kingdom Holding Co. is down 63 percent this year, costing him $13 billion in paper losses, according to Bloomberg.

The prince stepped up today and increased his stake in the megabank from 4 percent to 5 percent—a buy that Bloomberg estimates cost nearly $350 million. Citi's shares closed at a 15-year low of $4.71, down 26 percent for the day.

History may absolve him, but on this day, the prince looked desperate, hoping his aura would pull Citi out of the doldrums more effectively than massive job cuts, draconian restructuring, and, likely, a few more heads rolling from corner offices.

The cosmetic moves and shows of bravado won't hide what's ailing the markets or the U.S. economy: growing fears of corporate bankruptcies and credit chill that don't show any signs of lifting.Related Links

Choosy

imageIt’s so great when a developer creates a piece of software that matches precisely a feature that I’ve been wanting for years. This is the case with George Brocklehurst’s compactly executed and altogether wonderful utility Choosy, for Mac OS X. Once installed, it effectively intercepts your clicks on Web links from non-browser applications — Mail, Word, iChat, whatever — and displays a menu of available browsers that you can ‘send’ the link to.

Incredibly handy for people who use multiple browsers regularly — people like me and you, too, I’m guessing.

Counterparty Risk and Potential Losses from OTC Derivatives

In February, Barlcays estimated that if one major institution went down, there would most likely be between $36-$47 billion in losses due to counterparty risk in the credit default swap market as risk was repriced. A similar CDS study by BNP Paribas put the figure at $150 billion in potential losses.

But the repricing of risk extends just beyond the CDS market, IMF economists Miguel A. Segoviano and Manmohan Singh argue in a new working paper. Using data on banks' counterparty positions before the Bear Stearns collapse, the pair calculate the potential loss to the financial system from a repricing of risk across the entire OTC derivatives market:

The Wild Book, by Juan Villoro
(and some other guy)
About a year ago, a long tour –and detour– started, and today we reach at this nice result. It happens that the editors at Fondo de Cultura Económica, after my participation in the exhibit La DIFerencia en la Mirada, invited me to collaborate in a interesting, juicy project: to illustrate a whole book.
For many years I had a longing to do a project like this. I’m a fierce lover of books and letters, but the Graphic Designers’ job not always lead to this kind of work, and tends to focus on more practical, un-lyrical, rent-paying projects. Besides, I am glad that my début in these tasks is, nothing less, with one of Mexico’s most dynamic writers of today: Juan Villoro.
The plot is about, well, Literature, but also about mysterious, ubiquitous cats, far-out-characters, unpredictably-toothed girls, poetry-inspired food and many, many books, which happen to be more alive than a lot of walking people!
To illustrate this narrative was a challenge. I used traditional and digital techniques, but the final effect is rather warm, handcrafted, organic. I’m very happy with the result.
The Wild Book will be presented at the Main Hall of the National Center for the Arts, (Mexico City) this Sunday, November 23rd at 4PM, at the XXVIII Children and Young Readers’ Book Fair. There will be an illustration signing at 5PM. I’ll be glad to see you all there!

Pintada surrealista
