En pasados días les he hablado de cosas que benefician a OpenOffice y otras que los afectan, esta es más una noticia buena para ellos y en general para las aplicaciones que usan formatos libres, resulta que según un estudio de WebMasterPro la suite Ofimática OpenOffice está en el 21.5% de las computadoras alemanas.

Claro que esto es un porcentaje alto, sin embargo se sigue quedando corto frente al 72% de Microsoft Office, pero esto es una buena noticia para el Software Libre pues cada vez más personas, empresas e incluso el Gobierno se dan cuenta de que el costo de las licencias de Office puede ser reducido con una opción que si bien no la iguala por completo, si ofrece una de las mejores alternativas y que resuelve el 90% de las necesidades de los usuarios regulares.

El estudio ha sido llevado a cabo siguiendo un novedoso e inteligente método en lugar de las tradicionales encuestas donde cabe el factor engaño. Para ello han integrado en su sistema de estadísitcas web la capacidad de detectar las fuentes instaladas en los ordenadores que visitan las webs monitorizadas. Cada suite ofimática integra sus propias fuentes, como por ejemplo OpenSymbol de OpenOffice.org. El método, sin embargo, no es aplicable para suites en la nube como Google Docs.

Las cifras que maneja el estudio tienen que ser miradas con cierto cuidado, ya que la mayoría de PCs OEM suelen traer una versión de prueba de Microsoft Office que caduca a los 60 días, y según el método utilizado contarían para entrar en el 72% de cuota de Microsoft Office en Alemania. Además de los visores de archivos de Microsoft que la compañía ofrece de manera gratuita.

Sin embargo el plato fuerte del estudio es el 21,5% que ha conseguido OpenOffice.org, además no se trata sólo de usuarios domésticos ya que según el estudio está repartido también entre empresas a partes prácticamente iguales. Es un crecimiento bastante interesante, ya que ha ganado un 3% frente al año pasado y teniendo en cuenta la tendencia, es posible que siga creciendo.

Sin duda buenas noticias para los chicos de OpenOffice que ofrecen la que, desde mi punto de vista, es la mejor suite ofimática alternativa a Office.

Carlos Augusto Lozano: Dangerous file/directory permissions

In the *NIX systems are two special permissions usefuls for a lot of important programas (included basic functions of the O.S.). Theses pecial permissions are the SIUD and GUID permissions.

Maybe you read about them in other websites or books, so I only want to show you the security related implications. As you know in Linux (for mention any O.S.) are files like /etc/passwd where critical information, in this case the passwords are saved; but someday did you ask you how this information be separed for all users?

If you execute the command passwd in a shell you can change your password, and if you enter to the system as other user and execute passwd you'll change the password for these other user, but all passwords are saved into the same file. How?

Well if you check the /etc/passwd's permissions you can see the answer:

If you're an observer you'll be noticing that in the permissions are a letter S insted of a letter X. This is because passwd command is a root's command, and in theory only a priviligiated user like root can execute it. However as mortal user we need to change our passwords, so with this special permission you can execute a root's command with temporal permissions, but with limited capabilities, in this case only modify our information.

That's cool…!

Hum… nou!. Remember the basic rule of getting shells. If you exploit a application and obtain a shell, this new shell comes from the user that were executing the application. So, if you exploit a root's application the new shell comes from root… OMG!!

This program writes simples notes in /var/notes. The importan thing here is that then of each note the program mark them with the UID number, this is useful to separete information between users. Compile this program, change permissions (u+s) and change the owner and group to root:root.

As you can see in the GDB output the consecuentes of a vulnerability (in this case the use of strcpy() function) is terrible. But the problem isn't the use of special permissions, in fact is the best way to administrate a lot of thing in *NIX systems… the problem was the application.

El sábado pasado se cumplió un año más del natalicio del que sin duda es la figura más reconocida del Reggae a nivel mundial, de continuar en este mundo, Bob Marley hubiera cumplido 65 años, sin embargo su legado sigue dando frutos y gente como Demian “Junior Gong” Marley o Ziggy Marley siguen haciendo excelente música (si no pregunten en los Grammys por la familia Marley) pero bueno, a mí en lo personal no me gusta mucho el “hubiera” y prefiero pensar en lo de hoy.

También debo aclarar que no soy ni por mucho un experto, vamos pues ni siquiera soy muy conocedor del Reggae, me gusta como muchos otros géneros musicales, pero creo que el reggae es de los pocos géneros musicales que trascienden del plano musical llegando (para algunos) a ser una filosofía de vida.

Y justamente esta filosofía siempre ha sido de resistencia y de combatividad, canciones como “Africa Unite” o “Get Up Stand Up” de Marley son prueba de esta combatividad, es ahí donde encuentro muchas similitudes con el Movimiento del Software Libre y como una especie de homenaje a Bob Marley en este que es su mes, he decidido traerles la letra y un vídeo de la canción Redeption Songs, la cual como dije antes me hace pensar en las múltiples similitudes que existen entre esta música de denuncia de combatividad, con el movimiento del Software Libre:

Carlos Alberto Ríos Esparza: Ubuntu Cheat Cube: La terminal para seres humanos

El slogan que muchos conocen de Ubuntu es “Linux for Human Beings” (Linux para Seres Humanos), pues hoy en Ubuntu Life me encuentro con el “Ubuntu Cheat Cube” que no es más que un buen esfuerzo por hacer que los usuarios más nuevos en esta distro aprendan a usar la Terminal, es justamente una idea para hacer una “Terminal para Seres Humanos”, básicamente es un cubo armable en el cual podrán encontrar los comandos más comunes que se usan en la terminal, así como otros que son muy útiles, desde el clásico sudo apt-get install (para instalar algún paquete), hasta comandos para mover, crear y organizar ficheros y archivos.

Está claro que para un usuario avanzado esto no significará mucho, pero bien podría servir para todas aquellas personas a las que les hacemos una instalación de Ubuntu, podríamos regalarles este cubito y así ellos aprenderían más rápido ciertas cosas básicas de una herramienta tan poderosa y necesaria como es la terminal.

David Moreno: New features on Dancer 1.130

Last week, or the one before that one, Alexis released Dancer 1.130 which represents a big refactoring of the Dancer core code, taking all optional modules away from it: Logging, session and template engines were splited into their respective non-core modules, etc. Additionally, two keyword features were added, header and prefix. I will showcase both in case you haven't heard the good word from them

header

The header keyword allows you to modify or alter the response headers by hand. That was a nice little feature that still hadn't been implemented. With header you can do nice little things like this:

get '/set/header' => sub {
  header 'X-Foo' => 'bar';
  "I'm a happy string." . "\n";
}

And this is what that very same code does:

~ $ curl -i http://0.0.0.0:3000/set/header
HTTP/1.0 200 OK
X-Foo: bar
Content-Type: text/html
X-Powered-By: Perl Dancer 1.130

I'm a happy string.

Also, header has a method synonym, headers, and you can use both indistinctly:

get '/some/crap', sub {
  headers 'X-Foo' => 'Bar',
    'X-Bar' => 'Foo';
}

And it will produce the result that you are expecting.

prefix

prefix is also interesting. It will indicate that the following route handlers' path patters defined for Dancer will be prepended with such prefix. So:

prefix '/user';
get '/home', sub { template 'user_home' };
get '/logout', sub { "bye!" };

So here we are instructing Dancer two route handlers that happen to be really pointing to "/user/home" and "/user/logout". In order to stop prefixing the route handlers' paths you just do:

prefix undef;

And continue with your un-prepended paths.

Fernando Gómez: Instalación de KDE SC 4.4.0 en Fedora 12

Todavía no ha sido anunciado oficialmente KDE SC 4.4.0 pero el día de ayer en la noche noté que ya se encontraba disponible en Fedora 12 desde los repositorios de KDE RedHat unstable

Aquí comparto cómo instalarlo si desean hacerlo:

Primero deben agregar el repositorio de KDE RedHat:

su -c "wget http://apt.kde-redhat.org/apt/kde-redhat/fedora/kde.repo -O /etc/yum.repos.d/kde.repo"

Y por último instalar con el siguiente comando:

su -c "yum --enablerepo=kde* groupinstall 'KDE (K Desktop Environment)'"

O actualizar con lo siguiente:

su -c "yum --enablerepo=kde* update"

Hecho esto reinicien y ya podrán disfrutar del nuevo KDE

(Mañana publicaré la entrada con algunas de sus nuevas características ^_^)
