Según el premio Nobel de economía Andrew Michael "Estados Unidos se enfrentará a una recuperación de la recesión muy prolongada pese a la inyección de efectivo del Gobierno destinado a programas de estímulo y al sistema bancario". La verdad es que no hay que tener ningún galardón nórdico para darse cuenta que la cosa no está ni mucho menos encarrilada. El menor consumo americano imposibilita su recuperación. Otra cosa es que ese método caduco sea el mecanismo idóneo para salir de la misma. Consumir por consumir sólo trasladará en el tiempo el desencadenante y sus consecuencias. El problema no es tanto de reconducir el modelo de uso de la producción sino en establecer el verdadero valor y profundidad del problema: la economía norteamericana ha perdido casi nueve millones de empleos.

Las heridas de la economía americana que le llevarán a retrasar la recuperación son otras. Por un lado el déficit presupuestario que se amplió en 221.000 millones de dólares llegando a más de 1,4 billones de dólares, algo inédito y que se acerca a puntos de difícil retorno. La situación no es relativamente distinta a la española por ejemplo. Por otro, el aumento de parados limita la recaudación impositiva y los programas de estímulo y soporte social aumentan rápidamente. Aunque pueden parecer efectos muy parecidos al nuestro, la diferencia entre EUA y nosotros es su capacidad para poner en marcha políticas activas desde todos los escenarios ya sean públicos o privados.

Los números del déficit presupuestario son espantosos. Este déficit se debe a algo más que el gasto excesivo, sino también a la recesión en si misma y no se quiere aceptar como elemento estructural del déficit. No entrar en ese asunto y seguir pensando que la recesión está pasando es arriesgado puesto que, cuando los estímulos se deban de abandonar, el déficit y la deuda no podrá reducirse pues el tejido productivo estará todavía enfermo.

Cabe estimar como positivo que los comparables con febrero de 2009 son buenas relativamente. Se cae menos rápido pero se sigue cayendo. Es la fórmula que se utiliza en España por ejemplo para dar la impresión que se está frenando la caída. Si algún matemático o físico quiere ayudarme a ser didáctico lo agradeceré. Me gustaría mostrar gráficamente que seguir cayendo y hacerlo más lentamente es lógico después de una descenso muy duro y que es normal que éste se vaya moderando pero que “porcentualmente” sigue representando una caída similar en términos prácticos.

Un ejemplo claro. Ahora que los estímulos americanos se han frenado el déficit de febrero sumó 222.000 millones cuando la previsión de los “expertos” consultados hablaban de 180.000. En un informe emitido el 5 de marzo, la Oficina de Presupuesto del Congreso, un organismo independiente, calculó que el déficit de febrero sería de 223.000 millones, es decir, acertó. Ahora bien, la recaudación y otros ingresos subieron 23 por ciento curiosamente, representando el primer aumento de entradas desde abril de 2008, pero el déficit aumenta. ¿Curioso?

Por cierto, en EUA el Senado llegará a un acuerdo por el cual crearán un fondo 50.000 millones de dólares con aranceles procedentes de firmas financieras que pueden incluir a Goldman Sachs Group Inc. y Citigroup Inc. y que será usado para cerrar instituciones en quiebra. Préstamos de 50.000 euros de ENISA a través de CEAJE para jóvenes empresarios

Supongo que muchos habéis visto que en las últimas rondas de financiación que se están haciendo públicas muchas de ellas incluyen una parte de financiación pública principalmente de CDTI o ENISA. Seguramente gracias a la noticia que hoy publicamos esto vaya en aumento de forma significativa ya que ENISA (empresa pública dependiente de la Dirección General de PYME del Ministerio de Industria, Turismo y Comercio) ha puesto 25 millones de euros a disposición de CEAJE (Confederación Española de Asociaciones de Jóvenes Empresarios) para que los “reparta” en forma de créditos de hasta 50.000 euros a jovenes empresarios teniendo que aportar estos como única garantía su proyecto empresarial. Este acuerdo ha sido firmado recientemente por Patricio Rodríguez-Carmona, Presidente de CEAJE, Enrique Gómez, Consejero Delegado de ENISA y Pedro Granado, Director de Consultoría Financiera de ENISA.

Este plan de financiación para emprendedores tiene una duración hasta marzo de 2011 y está destinado a facilitar la financiación a jóvenes empresarios que necesiten préstamos para pequeñas y medianas empresas (PYME) de reciente creación. Hasta 50.000 euros que si se complementan adecuadamente con financiación privada puede ser una cantidad adecuada para en el caso de internet comenzar con el desarrollo de un proyecto para desarrollar una beta que poner en producción o con la que acudir en busca de más financiación.

Lo mejor de esta noticia es que según me ha comentado Alvaro Cuesta Secretario General de AJE Madrid no se trata de una acción puntual sino de un proyecto a largo plazo desde el que CEAJE busca en la medida de sus posibilidades apoyar a todos los emprendedores y PYME’s de nuestro país, en este caso gracias a la financiación de ENISA. Los emprendedores interesados en solicitar estos préstamos podéis acudir a la AJE de vuestra ciudad que es desde donde se realizan los trámites correspondientes.

YouTube and creative suicide

In 1937, just as technology was gathering momentum, George Orwell identified one of its fundamental truths. “No one draws water from the well,” he wrote, “when he can run the tap.” As soon as science gives us an easy way of doing something, doing it the old way instantly becomes a hopeless waste of time, in other words, a hobby. Once you can buy factory-built furniture the only reason to fashion a table for yourself is the arts and crafts impulse, and this, he observed, was the preserve of the “bearded fruit juice drinker”. The effect on craftsmanship is permanent. “In such circumstances,” he said, “it is nonsense to talk of ‘creative work’.”

So what is advertising going to do, now that ideas are available on tap,
in every office? Much has been written about the ethics of purloining ideas from YouTube [notably by CR here]. No one has stopped doing it. This isn’t surprising for anyone who’s worked on a nightmare brief. The one that’s been through the agency eight times, the one that comes with an apology from the head of planning, the brief that won’t flush.

The first day is OK, you deflect your partner’s ideas, eliminating the obvious. Even the second day has a kind of hysterical calm, like a test match at gunpoint. It’s the third day, when you’re in the desert, the place where careers are really made or broken, and the review appears at 4pm. Suddenly that clip of a poodle playing a bassoon starts to look so very very right.

It doesn’t just make sense for spineless creatives either. It’s an economic imperative. The problem is there in Orwell’s oxymoron: ‘creative work’. Work that is play. On the one hand advertising is an exercise in waste, an opportunity for brands to engage in that most inefficient of behaviours, entertainment. On the other it’s an industry, a multi-million pound concern, a tough market that promises its clients efficiency. Yes it would be lovely if we could all sit round having ideas, maybe playing a sitar, but if you can get it quicker from the net, you better do it alright?

And this will be fine until clients wise up. The net is accessible to all, so why is a brand going to pay an agency millions of pounds to trawl it for them? That there’s an art to the selection of content is the agency’s last claim to legitimacy. But it’s threadbare. Ditch the agency and how will the brand manager know which clip to choose? He won’t need to. As Bernbach said, research can’t have ideas, but it can certainly help select them. You can’t put the genie back in the bottle. It’s us or the computers and for the money men that’s a no-brainer. We don’t have to embrace the future, it’s coming for us like a septic great-aunt.

New Work: 20 Launceston Place

William Russell has undertaken a sensitive and careful remodelling of a Grade 2 listed building in Kensington London. The building had been extended organically over the last hundred years to the point where little of the original remained barring the staircase. The project involved stripping away and cleaning up the space in order to create a four-bedroom home with large entertaining spaces. More pictures of the house after the jump. The client required a sense of grandeur and opulence fitting the scale of the 3,200 sq ft space. They were also keen to use high quality materials some of which they sourced themselves, for example the family bathroom is almost entirely clad in Carrara marble and the renovation features reclaimed French parquet and stone flooring. The completed house includes on the lower ground level an extensive entertainment space and home cinema along with a large storage and utility room freeing up space in the kitchen/dining area on the floor above. A new staircase was installed at this level which, creates a more generous hallway by opening up the space. The kitchen/dining area on the upper ground level runs front to back and is accompanied on this floor by a library overlooking the garden. The first floor consists of the children’s room and the master bedroom along with the shared marble bathroom and the roof space was opened up to create two further bedrooms a guest bathroom and a new roof terrace. The kitchen layout was designed by Pentagram and then styled, built and installed by Mark Wilkinson and the other built in furniture was designed by Pentagram and is made from solid oak held together with traditional dovetail joints.

Ayer estuve en eSTAS en un minipanel junto a mi amigo Antonio Fumero. Ya tenemos el video gracias a AgoraNews. Es cierto que en quince minutos no se puede decir gran cosa pero seguro que os interesarán algunas rápidas reflexiones que allí hago. La primera sobre lo que ayer comentábamos respecto a la tomadura de pelo del simular el empoderamiento de la gente y la segunda sobre la inutilidad de la prensa actual. No os perdáis lo último que digo. Me dirijo a un alto cargo de un ministerio español que estaba en primera fila preguntándole "usted sabe que lo que digo es cierto, ¿Verdad?", no se ve, pero el hombre asintió con la cabeza.
