‘Dracula: Year Zero’ Crawls Back Out of the Grave at Universal

In an age of competing projects, we should expect to see this sort of thing happen a lot more often. Earlier today we talked about the fact that Warner Bros. might be looking to Russell Crowe to star in Harker, Jaume Collet-Serra’s revamped take on Dracula.

So what does Universal do? The studio, which really has a certain claim to Dracula given the 1931 version (or the two ’31 versions if you take the Spanish-language one into account) has taken the old project Dracula: Year Zero out of mothballs. The film has lain dormant since a version with Alex Proyas directing Sam Worthington was scrapped thanks to an escalating budget.

The only key detail we have now is that Michael De Luca will continue to produce, and now Gary Shore will direct. (He’s the commercial and music video director who made this Wolverine trailer.) No word on cast yet, but Sam Worthington isn’t involved, says Deadline.

If we turn back the clock a couple years, we can find this interview with Collider where De Luca expanded on the story:

…these writers came up with the ingenious-what I think is ingenious-approach combining historical Dracula with Bram Stoker’s Dracula. So it chronicles the efforts of a young prince, Vlad of Transylvania trying to keep the Ottoman empire and the Turk’s of the time from using his small country as a stepping stone to invade Europe. So there’s a historical basis for all of that history that’s in the script, but when his back is up against the wall and he can’t figure out how to keep the Turkish army out of his country and keep their hands off his country’s children, which they want to kidnap and press into their army as something they used to call the Jannisserie core, I guess the Roman’s did a version of it also, but this taking of male children from host countries and pressing them into military service for the invading army is another thing he’s trying to prevent. Because his own son is being threatened with that kidnapping. And in the script that we have, he was actually a victim of it himself. He earned the reputation of being the impaler while he was serving the Turks.

(I’ve used the poster for Hammer’s Dracula Has Risen From the Grave as the header image purely because of the semi-appropriate title. The two films have nothing to do with one another.)

Red Letter Media Converts ‘Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace’ Review Into 3D

While most of my memories leading up to Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace were positive, the best one I have as a direct result of the movie was falling off a chair from laughing so hard at the video review by Red Letter Media. The 70-minute evisceration of the film is a work of unparalleled genius and turned the review persona of Mr. Plinkett into an internet legend.

With the film being released in theaters this weekend, Red Letter Media couldn’t pass up the chance to get a few more views by following George Lucas’ lead and converting the review to 3D. Check it out.

Here are both parts of the review from Red Letter Media‘s site. Of course, you’ll need the old school red and blue 3D glasses for the experience to work. The Real-D ones you left in your pocket after Tintin will not do the trick.

VOTD: 60 Second ‘Requiem For A Dream’ With Puppets Will Mess You Up

Over a decade since its release, Darren Aronofsky’s Requiem for a Dream remains a visceral and disturbing piece of modern cinema. The filmmaker’s gnawing portrayal of drug addiction coupled with a hyper stylized aesthetic can make even the most tough-stomached person squirm in their seat.

You’d think seeing the same images with puppets would soften the blow, but Brendan James Boyd‘s 60 -econd film for the 2012 Vancouver Fake Film Fest proves likewise. Hearing puppets say “tail to tail” in place of another famous line, watching a fuzzy arm get chopped off or puppet electroshock therapy is almost more disturbing when it’s non-humans. Check it out after the jump.

Obviously I was exaggurating just a little when I suggested this video isdisturbing as the original film but what it does do, beyond a shadow of a doubt, is prove Aronofsky’s directorial choices were the true star of Requiem for a Dream. That’s not a knock on Jennifer Connolly, Jared Leto, Marlon Wayans or especially not Ellen Burstyn, who is absolute magic in the film. They’re certainly the glue the holds everything together. But Aronofsky got into the audience’s head with the sound design, Kronos Quartet, repetition, split screens, alternating lenses and every other trick he pulled out, most of which are duplicated here to almost the same effect.

Saoirse Ronan Will Lead Disney’s ‘The Order of the Seven,’ Formerly ‘Snow and the Seven’

For quite some time, Disney has been developing a new live-action version of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in which the old story would get a fairly modern makeover. Michael Chabon wrote the initial version, but the film has been tweaked a few times over the past decade with directors as disparate as Yuen Wo-ping and Francis Lawrence attached at different times.

Then something happened. Or, really, two somethings happened, as Universal and Relativity Media beat Disney to the punch with Snow White and the Huntsman and Mirror, Mirror, both of which are set to open this year. Two live-action Snow White re-tellings is goofy enough, and adding a third would strain audience interest like crazy.

So the Disney movie, which has had various titles over the years (most commonly Snow and the Seven) has been reworked again to eliminate all overt Snow White ties. What’s left is The Order of the Seven, a martial arts action film centered around a young heroine. Saoirse Ronan (The Lovely Bones, Hanna) is in talks to take that lead role.

Variety offers a description of the new storyline in The Order of the Seven:

Ronan would play Olivia Sinclair, a British expat in 19th century Hong Kong, who seeks the protection of a centuries old group of warriors, now a jaded group of outlaws. After the reemergence of an ancient evil empress, Sinclair helps the warriors reclaim their destiny and noble roots.

Those who’ve been keeping up with current trends in film financing and global sales will probably already have made a certain assumption based on that synopsis: there are roles in this film for Chinese actors, which will help the film sell in China.

In fact, says Variety, there are roles for Chinese, Russian and Japanese actors, and Disney wants well-known stars from those countries to help fill out the film’s “global team of heroes.” Here’s the synopsis we got last year, which might shed some light on what we can expect:

The seven are a 19th century-set disparate band of international warriors belonging to a centuries-old order who have lost their way. Their meeting with an Englishwoman being chased by an ancient evil is the catalyst for their redemption. While the project is set in China, the warriors will be from locales near (the U.S.) and far (Russia), and each warrior will have a unique fighting style.

The film will ideally shoot this fall under the direction of Michael Gracey, a commercial director and visual effects supervisor who gets to make his feature debut here. Jayson Rothwell and Michael DeBruyn wrote the current draft.

Zombie Romance ‘Warm Bodies’ Pushed From Summer to February 2013

If you have any spare sympathy cards lying around, might want to address one to Nicholas Hoult. The actor had a good turn last year in X-Men: First Class, and had two films set to release in 2012: Jack the Giant Killer and Warm Bodies. But last month Jack was pushed to March 2013, and now Warm Bodies has been pushed from August 10 of this year to February 1 of 2013.

Is that move actually a bad thing? There is currently no competition on the new 2013 date, and mid to late August has been more of a dumping ground in the past few years than has January or February.

In Warm Bodies Hoult plays “an unusual zombie who rescues a girl from imminent death at the hands of his cohorts and their unlikely romance setting in motion a chain of events that will transform him, his fellow dead, and maybe even the whole lifeless world.” It’s the sort of film that could need help finding an audience.

A good showing from Jack the Giant Killer might have given it an assist, as it would have raised Hoult’s profile. But now that Warm Bodies has to open before Jack, that August date could have seen it suffering from the movie fatigue that seems to hit audiences at the end of July. It might have a much better chance in February. This is a Summit release, and the recent Lionsgate purchase of that studio could have something to do with the move, too.
