This is a nice Vee-Jay Label collection with representative cuts from Pee Wee Crayton, John Lee Hooker, Jimmy Reed, Lightnin' Hopkins, Billy Boy Arnold, Memphis Slim and a stray track from Brownie McGhee and Sonny Terry. The big ticket for collectors on this one, however, is the inexplicable bonus of a previously unissued Eddie Taylor number, "Leave This Neighborhood," reason enough for hardcore fans to want to add this one to the collection. Hubo una época en que lo alternativo dejó de serlo y se convirtió en la primera, sino la única, opción. Así que, adiós a las melodías fm’s, adiós a la corrección, adiós al mainstream,… Esa era la opinión generalizada, romper con el sistema, ahora. Era el resurgir punk antes de volver a ser asimilado por el sistema y el consumismo. Grandes valores, correctos o equivocados, quedaron en el camino y después de más de quince años sólo nos queda la nostalgia y un buen puñado de grandes discos.

El fenómeno de las Riot Grrrls quedó absorvido por aquella marabunta mal llamada grunge, más por la actitud de los artistas que de los estilos musicales en sí.

Babes in Toyland pertenecían a esa corriente de “chicas guerreras” aunque intentaron desmarcarse de ello, consiguiendo unicamente la confusión del personal que debía buscar sus discos en la sección de Heavy-Metal, Alternativo, Punk,… pero es lógico, teniendo en cuenta que no sentían afinidad con el posicionamiento político de sus compañeras de generación. O lo que es más importante, no deseaban politizar su obra, tan sólo tocar su forma de entender el rock & roll: Fontanelle es un disco bruto, oscuro, un mal viaje metálico de unos Jane’s Addiction despojados de su misticismo. Es rock & roll gutural, una patada en el trasero del oyente. Fuerza bruta, sin margen a la duda ni las medias tintas,… Kat Bjellan no es Kurt Cobain ni Eddie Vedder, y lo deja bien claro en los catorce cortes de este disco.

Massive Attack son noticia esta semana por diversos motivos, todos relacionados con sus nuevas referencias, "Heliogoland" y un próximo EP.

"Heliogoland", publicado ayer, va a ser publicitado de una curiosa manera. Bajo el nombre de Tweatre nos llega una pagina web en la que podremos ver 7 cortos, todos ellos con la música de la banda de Bristol de fondo. Pero no todos ellos se utilizarán como videoclips oficiales, sino que solamente unos pocos serán los escogidos, como el siguiente "Splitting The Atom".

Para poder ver el resto solo tienes que tener una cuenta en Twitter y hacer login en la pagina arriba mencionada. De momento solo hay cuatro de los 7 anunciados, aunque pronto se podrán ir viendo.

La otra noticia que ha salido esta semana respecto a los ingleses es un nuevo EP, previsto para mayo, en el que incluirán aquellos temas que se les quedaron fuera de "Heliogoland", además, esto no es seguro, puede que algún que otro tema 100% nuevo, creado para dicha referencia.

If only for a few downs, really incomprehensible, "O Bannu" (the auctioneer) would be one of the best albums of folk GM in recent times. Just listen to the initial "Polcabasilisca" and appreciate the valuable work of rebuilding the polka – faster than usual, explosive in a vertigo of sound that ideally connects the past (buried, moldy, vilified despite ofthe nostalgia of the alleged insane conservative tradition) and the time of today (elusive, 'liquid', plural) reaffirming that reality can only be in flux. Like it or not.
Graziano Accinni, creator of the project Ethnos, guitarist and composer working in pop music for a  long time, returns to his native region and walks through the rubble of Basilicata, a land that seems left in the first World War, yet so fascinating in its dignified rural poverty. In the sixteen pieces that make up this score there are the tradition of the Agri Valley (province of Potenza) (devotional songs, lullabies, tarantella, dance), and suggestions of new composition that draw skilfully Greek tradition, Moroccan, Spanish and Portuguese.
A compact body, governed by an underlying logic convincing (the idea of a unique music of Southern Europe, ie, which is based across the Mediterranean), played by excellent musicians of various origins, enveloping sound with soul, of very balanced, never too ostentatious in their time of great instrumental virtuosity…

"This release sees Man rely less on the Hammond and harmonized vocals, and more on hard-driven guitar. Its compositional ambitions are perhaps a bit greater -- it opens with "Prelude" and "The Storm," an extended jam that became ever longer and even more free form over the years as a concert favorite. "It Is as It Must Be" circles around the monster groove of a two-chord guitar vamp, while "Spunk Rock" struts over a jagged floor of overdriven guitar and yelped vocals. "Hot on the heels of his commercial breakthrough Touchdown, which contained the monster hit "Angela (Theme from Taxi)," Bob James teamed up with acoustic guitarist Earl Klugh for the first of two hit duet albums. One on One is not strictly a duet side, however. "The role of the flamenco guitar has evolved through the playing of Paco de Lucia (born Francisco Sanchez Gomez). The son of flamenco guitarist Antonio Sanchez and the brother of a flamenco guitarist, Ramon, and flamenco singer, Pepe, de Lucia has extended the former accompaniment-only tradition of flamenco guitar to include deeply personal melodic statements and modern instrumentation. His collaborations have included ten albums with late flamenco vocalist El Camaron de la Isla and work with American pianist Chick Corea and the Guitar Trio, featuring guitarists John McLaughlin, Larry Coryell, and Al DiMeola. His recordings with his sextet, which includes his brothers Ramon and Pepe, include such groundbreaking masterpieces as La Fabulosa Guitarra de Paco de Lucia, Fantasia Flamenca, Fuente y Caudal, Almoraima, and Zyryab. Yet, de Lucia has not completely forsaken traditional flamenco. His 1980 album, Interpreta a Manuel de Falla, paid homage to the classical composer and flamenco enthusiast, while his 1987 album, Siroco, marked a return to pure flamenco. "I have never lost the roots in my music," de Lucia said during a late-'90s interview, "because I would lose myself. What I have tried to do is have a hand holding onto tradition and the other scratching, digging in other places, trying to find new things I can bring into flamenco."

Born in Algeciras, a small city in southernmost Spain's Cadiz province, de Lucia was bred to be a world-class musician. He trained with his father and brother from the age of five. Mastering the art of flamenco guitar by his 11th birthday, he made his public performance debut on Radio Algeciras in 1958. A year later, he received a special award at the Festival Concurso International Flamenco de Jerez de la Frontera. Heralded as a child prodigy, de Lucia was invited to join the flamenco troupe led by dancer Jose Greco at the age of 16. He remained with the group for three years. A turning point in de Lucia's musical development came while on tour with Greco's troupe in North America. Meeting Sabicas, the first flamenco guitarist to tour the world, he was instructed to pursue his own style of playing. Although he remained tied to traditional flamenco on his first two solo albums -- La Fabulosa Guitarra de Paco de Lucia in 1967 and Fantasia Flamenca in 1969 -- and recorded ten albums accompanying flamenco vocalist de la Isla, de Lucia continued to seek a personal approach. "

Lightspeed Champion - Life Is Sweet! Nice To Meet You

Ya tenemos la versión buena del nuevo disco de Lightspeed Champion (ayer se filtro una bastante mala), y la verdad es que esta bastante mejor de lo que me esperaba. Aunque se le ha ido la mano con la duración del disco (15 canciones y 50 minutos), esta mucho mejor que el EP que saco hace unas semanas y canciones como Marlene (también en el EP) Romart, y sobre todo Madame Van Damme están al nivel de lo mejor de su álbum de debut.

Eso si, esta un poco más tranquilo y en algunos momentos parece que le ha dado por sacar sus lejanas raíces tejanas.

El Tracklist Y La Portada De... Delorean - Subiza

Delorean es una banda querida por aquí, a la cual hemos visto crecer. Primero llego su segundo disco, "Into The Plateau", en el que dejaban claro que su estilo musical iba a ser ese, más cercano a la electrónica que al post-punk de sus inicios. Con el se ganaron un hueco en una difícil escena, sobre todo en grupos que se mueven tanto dentro del indie como de la electrónica, eso si, siempre queriendo gustar más a los rockeros que van de concierto que a los amantes de los beats que van a las discotecas. Moviéndose entre dos aguas consiguieron hacerse conocer, que la gente que no sabía ni quienes eran les nombraran.

Si aquel último trabajo para BCore dio el primer paso, con su debut para Mushroom Pillow, el EP "Ayrton Senna", pusieron los dos pies encima de la mesa, enamorando a la difícil prensa norteamericana. Una excelente forma de decir que ahí estaban ellos y que cuidadito con lo próximo que iban a arrasar en tu festival veraniego. Muestra de ello la pudimos oír hace un mes en la Joy Eslava donde pudimos catar dos nuevos temas de la banda: "Grow" y "Stay Close", correspondientes a "Subiza", su esperado nuevo trabajo. Hip-O Select está sacanado últimamente unas cajas que me ponen los dientes a la altura del tobillo. Si ya lo hizo con las dedicadas a Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald y Oscar Peterson hace algunos meses, ahora va y saca "Through the Years", un boxset de tres discos dedicado a Abbey Lincoln que abarca desde su debut en 1956 hasta su última grabación de estudio fechada en 2007. Notes: Lil Joe Washington was born in Houston (1939). By nine he was also blowing on a trumpet, and by fifteen he was pounding on drums in a band led by Albert Collins. It wasn't until he started bending the strings of a guitar and imitating local phenomenon Joe Hughes that he became known generally by the moniker 'Little Joe'. Following a brief apprenticeship in Houston clubs, the wiry guitarist toured with Roscoe Gordon1s road band. Later, with Cecil Harvey's group, he worked the territory from Texas to Nevada. Around the age of twenty he settled if that's the word for the wild lifestyle he recalls there in El Paso, where he played the rowdy border town circuit, including a stint at the Lobby Bar in Juarez, Mexico. There he met the group The Champs, who took him to California in 1961 to record on the Donna label. In 1963 Little Joe returned to Los Angeles, where he recorded for the Federal label some singles.
In the years that immediately followed, Little Joe bounced around his old turf, from Houston to Juarez and back, performing with all manner of groups. But the bad habits he'd developed in the wide-open party atmosphere of the border bars eventually made him an all-too-willing victim of substance abuse. During the hazy couple of decades that followed, he would often find himself on the streets, owning nothing but the pawn ticket for his guitar. By the mid-1990s he was essentially homeless: first camping out in the dilapidated structure that had once been his uncle's barbershop, then (after it burned down in 1997) sleeping in an abandoned car that he had pushed onto the vacant lot. But he never stopped making music. In fact he claims to have found inspiration by being forced by circumstance to hear certain sounds: the constantly improvised riffs of the mockingbird, the staccato bark-and-response of dogs, the eerie howl of a chilly wind. In the past few years, Little Joe Washington has experienced a personal renaissance of sorts (and now has a stable roof overhead). With regular gigging and a few tours abroad, his sound has evolved into something truly unique a potent synthesis of the classic R&B of his youth and the hard blues realities of his later years. His piercing fretwork on gutbucket guitar and his weathered, wailing voice have grown ever more distinctive. In bursts of stream-of-consciousness expressionism they reflect the way this man has truly lived: hard as bone, directly connected to the urban landscape, impoverished of almost everything but the capacity for deep feeling and the will to make music.
This album was recorded in Japan tour on August, 2004 in Tokyo.
