Arecibo Observatory Facing Massive Budget Cuts

SirLurksAlot writes "Many supporters of the SETI@home project have recently received a message informing them of impending budget cuts for the Arecibo Observatory and asks them to show their support for the project by writing to Congress. The letter also informs supporters that there are currently two bills (Senate bill 2862 sponsored by Senator Hillary Clinton, and a similar House bill, H.R. 3737), which are intended to secure funding for the project. According to The Planetary Society the current plan for the Arecibo Observatory involves cutting funding by more than 60% from $10.4 million to just $4 million by 2011."

Think Before You Voicemail

Voicemail is dead. Please tell everyone so they’ll stop using it.

When I first started out in the real world in the mid-nineties voicemail was an important productivity tool. I remember people talking about the pros and cons of various enterprise voicemail systems - which had the best forwarding and group messaging, which allowed for archiving, and how many messages could be stored and for how long. Even though email was around, people were still unsure how to use it. Letters went on letterhead and were formal. Voicemail was informal and common. Email etiquette was still being developed. It was good for mass-forwarding jokes and moving Word, Excel, and Powerpoint files around, but it took a while for email to take over as older generations moved out of the workplace or got with the program.

But now an increasing number of people are just plain avoiding voicemail (for my impromptu and unscientific survey, see the comments here, which are predominantly anti-voicemail). It takes much longer to listen to a message than read it. And voicemail is usually outside of our typical workflow, making it hard to forward or reply to easily.

Typical voicemail messages today include things like “Please don’t leave me a voicemail, I rarely listen to them. Please just email me at xxxx@xxxx.com” Many people don’t bother setting up their voicemail accounts at all. Then there’s my favorite method, the one I use personally - let the message box get full and then don’t empty it. Caller ID still tells me who called, and I can simply call them back.

How many times have you called someone back and said “I saw that you called but didn’t listen to the voicemail yet, Is it anything urgent?”

Senders often feel guilty for leaving voicemails, too. And to make sure you get the message, quite often people will follow up with a text message - “Just left you a VM, it’s important” - just so you know it’s there.

There are startups that are trying to make voicemail more useful. Pinger, GrandCentral and YouMail are among them. The iPhone’s visual voicemail feature helps clean up the clutter, too. But at the end of the day you still need to take time to listen to those voicemails, and that usually comes after other equally urgent but less disruptive tasks.

The services that really make voicemail more usable are those that convert voicemail into text and then send it to you via email or SMS (Spinvox, PhoneTag Yap and Jott, for example).

More mobile carriers are offering text conversion for a monthly or per-message fee. It’s my guess this will become more and more common. Voice is here to stay as a data input method, but listening to messages will certainly become an increasing luxury, to be reserved for loved ones or those messages that aren’t transcribed properly (or you need to hear it for tone or emotion).

For now most people don’t have voicemail transcription services. So think before you voicemail, more and more people just find it annoying.

Hugh Pickens writes "Volkswagen is bringing new meaning to the term "fuel efficiency" with a bullet-shaped microcar that gets 235 mpg. Called the One-Liter because that's how much fuel it needs to go 100 kilometers, the body's made of carbon fiber to minimize weight and the One-Liter makes extensive use of magnesium, titanium and aluminum so the entire vehicle weighs in at 660 pounds. Aerodynamics plays a big role in its fuel economy so the car is long and low, coming in at 11.4 feet long, 4.1 feet wide and 3.3 feet tall with a coefficient of drag of 0.16, a little more than half that of an average car. The One-Liter could have a sticker price of anywhere from $31,750 to $47,622 and VW plans to build a limited number in 2010."

Pues no me acuerdo, lo veria referenciado en algun blog como el de furilo.com loogic.com o alguno por el estilo.

¿has descubierto algún conciertazo con nuestras alertas?

Realmente no, pero si que me ha servido para recordar algunos que yo mismo habia introducido previamente.

¿a qué usuarios sigues activamente o destacarías?

No sigo especialmente a ninguno, pero destacaría sin duda a lagoyi y su frenética actividad.

¿por qué decidiste participar activamente añadiendo conciertos?

Comencé añadiendo los conciertos de mi grupo y me gusto mucho como estaba planteado el sistema de la página. Lo que me animo definitivamente fue probar lo de Google Adsense, (hasta entonces ni siquiera lo había puesto en mi página personal), y ver que poquito a poco la cosa iba sumando.

¿podrías darnos una estimación de lo que has ganado hasta ahora, o cada mes?

Algo más de 200 euros, desde hace un tiempo manteniendose una regularidad, aunque con un mes como mayo que fue especialmente bueno.

¿Qué es lo que más te gusta de nvivo.es?

El concepto de la propia página, que sirva tanto para informarte de conciertos (por provincia, por grupo, por sala con sus alertas por mail) como para poder promocionarlos si eres parte interesada, (banda, promotora, bar o sala…).

¿y lo que menos?

Algunos fallos que hay por ahí, aunque me cuesta poco notificarlos.

¿Qué añadirias? ¿qué quitarías?

A la página le añadiria algunos cambios en la gestión de festivales, que lo veo poco intuitivo. Y saliendome de la propia página en si trataria de añadir mayor masa de usuarios que añadan conciertos, y no quizas gente que añada conciertos a saco tanto atraidos por el reparto de ganancias como puede ser mi caso como más enfocado a la larga cola, es decir que haya muchos pequeños usuarios (salas, bares, grupos, promotoras) añadiendo sus propios conciertos. Vaya que nvivo.es se convierta en una página de referencia conocida por todo el mundillo y donde haya que estar. Seguro que en un tiempo será así y no pueda añadir nada porque alguien ya lo introdujo antes.

No se me ocurre nada que quitar.

An article in InfoWorld mentions that 'Freedom will come with a price — $599 for an 8GB device and $699 for a 16GB — but this will mark the first time consumers in the United States are able to buy an iPhone without being tied down to a two-year contract. The phone probably would still be locked for use only on AT&T's network, said Jupiter Research analyst Michael Gartenberg. But buyers could choose a pay-as-you-go plan for voice service.' The question still remains, does it make any sense to pay that much for a phone that is still locked to AT&T's network even if you aren't bound to a contract?"

Yahoo’s Helpful Shortcut To Pictures Of Underage Girls

Yahoo Shortcuts automatically finds and underlines interesting items in articles and provides additional information via a pop up window (Yahoo Shortcuts also refers to shortcuts in Yahoo Search for common things like travel search). “People, places, organizations, and other things of interest are underlined,” says the FAQ.

One blogger is pointing out, though, that the tool may be going a little too far - by, for example, linking the term “underage girl” in a recent article about Ashley Dupre, the prostitute that led to the downfall of Eliot Spitzer. The Yahoo Shortcut helpfully links to a set of flickr pictures of underage women.

This is probably a term that you want to add to the blacklist, Yahoo.

Only thing; it wants the dismissal to be 'without prejudice' so it won't be liable for attorney's fees. The courts have been saying that where a copyright plaintiff gives up, the defendant is presumptively entitled to an attorney's fee award. So, Ms. Lindor says 'no way.' She wants the dismissal to be 'with prejudice,' and she wants her attorney's fees." We've been discussing this case and Ms. Lindor's fight against the RIAA for quite some time.

6月24日Google Ad Planner发布当天，同类型公司comScore股价暴跌了约23%（Via），Google在这个领域因为其有着一整套完整的广告服务，其收集数据的能力应该也是其他公司所不能比拟的。尽管刚刚进入这个领域，但是Google Ad Planner应该会成为这个领域内的强有力竞争者。

Wedtool.com es uno de los proyectos presentados al evento Seedrocket y destaca el entusiasmo con el que sus fundadores venden su idea.

Wedtool es una aplicación web para que los novios gestionen todo lo relativo a su boda, desde las invitaciones, presupuestos, alertas de tareas, … además disponen de la opción de crear su propia web y un blog con toda la información de la boda.

Wedtool también cuenta con servicios para los restaurantes con lo que hay un claro enfoque de negocio por el interés que pueden tener los restaurantes en ofrecer ofertas especiales para quienes organicen su banquete usando esta aplicación.

En Wedtool han desarrollado una extensa guía explicativa para que los usuarios puedan entender perfectamente como funciona la aplicación.

We have been in Spain for nearly two weeks now. Most of the boxes and bags are unpacked. We have a phone line, gas, broadband, mobile and electricity accounts in our names and we put a deposit on a car (a Prius). It has been busy.

The most difficult thing to deal with has been the banks - both Spanish and Irish. Bank of Ireland have been particularly unhelpful and inflexible.

My brother-in-law has a time share in Almeria he couldn’t take up this coming week so he offered it to us. This afternoon we are heading to the beach for a week! I’ll be the one under the umbrella, trying desperately to stay in the shade!

ICANN Loses Control of Its Own Domain Names

A domain registrar run by the group transferred the domains to someone else. ICANN's press release had this to say: 'As has been widely reported, a number of domain names, including icann.com and iana.com were recently redirected to different DNS servers, allowing a group to provide visitors to those domains with their own website. It would appear the attack was sophisticated, combining both social and technological techniques, but was also limited and focused.' Comcast has had similar troubles lately as well."

Mississippi is the fattest state in the Union, with 30.1% of Mississippians being obese. That’s almost one in every three inhabitants. Not that the Magnolia State (in red on this map) should be singled out for its massiveness. It is surrounded by four of the eight other fattest US states (in brown on this map): Tennessee (29.0%), Arkansas (29.3%), Louisiana (29.5%) and Alabama (30.1%). Being overweight clearly is a Southern thing - even if the second-fattest state, West-Virginia (30.6%), broke away from the rebellious South in 1863 to join the North.

The other states in the top obesity bracket are Oklahoma (28.1%), Kentucky (28.4%) and South Carolina (29.2%). The next bracket (26 to 28% of inhabitants obese) is filled out by nine states, three of which are Southern (Texas, Georgia and North Carolina), three adjoin the Great Lakes (Michigan, Indiana and Ohio) and three are clustered in the Midwest (Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri).

The leanest states also tend to cluster: states in the least but one category (22 to 24%) include Maine and New Hampshire; New York and New Jersey; and California, Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico.
Some of the least obese (20.7 to 22%) states are Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut.
Another one, Utah, is adjacent to Colorado, which is by far the leanest state of them all (18.4%).
Overall, the Soutwest and New England are counting calories, while the South and to a lesser extent the Midwest are piling on the pounds.

Obesity, it may be useful to repeat, is not a euphemism for being overweight. It means being so fat that one’s health is affected. You are defined as obese if you have a body mass index of 30 or over (with a bmi of between 25 and 30, you are merely overweight). The US is the most overweight nation in the world, with over a quarter of the total population being obese. Obesity is a global phenomenon, however. It was recently reported that for the first time in history, there are now more overweight than malnourished people in the world.
