Publicize: Facebook — Images

Back in February, we launched Publicize: Facebook as a way to connect your WordPress.com account to your Facebook profile.

In March, VideoPress added support for Facebook so that when using Publicize, your videos would get added to your Facebook update as well.

Until now, we’ve neglected your images.

Starting today, however, we’ll cherish your images as much as we already do your text and video; when sending a Facebook Profile update, WordPress.com will include any image you upload to the post. Image support was the #1 most requested feature for Publicize: Facebook, and we’re happy we finally got around to it

(Before you ask, the #2 most requested feature is the ability to update Facebook Pages as well as Profiles, so it’s already on our list.)

Since we started, you’ve sent out nearly 1.3 million Facebook updates from WordPress.com. Keep them going!

NB: Only the first five images uploaded to a post and included directly, in a gallery, or in a slideshow will be sent to Facebook.

A broken telephone I saw while wandering around Bangkok

It’s happened to all of us. The night starts off innocently enough with a little gin and tonic, maybe a mojito, then next thing you know you’re doing tequila shots with the bartender and the girl from Brazil and you find yourself thinking it would be a treMENdous idea to call up your ex and see how they’re doing and perhaps impress them with your newfound wit.

We’ve got the cure. Now, instead of drunk dialing random friends, lovers, and acquaintances one at a time, what if you could dial your blog and talk to the whole world at once? It’d be like something out of Star Trek.

The future is now, folks. You can now go to your My Blogs tab, enable Post by Voice, and get a special number and code to call your blog. After you’re done, the audio file from your phone call will be posted to your blog for all to listen to and enjoy. (And added to your RSS feed for podcast support.)

So now you can post to your WordPress via the web, email, iPhone, Android, Blackberry, desktop clients, and now any telephone in the world. Of course when you post it can be pushed to Facebook, Twitter, and more using the Publicize feature. What more could you want?

Right now this is completely free, but we’ll charge you money to take down posts. Just kidding! We’re making it free and allowing recording lengths up to sixty minutes, but that limit may go down without a paid upgrade in the future. Mostly we’re just curious to see how people use this.

Support the First Amendment with 1 for All

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Born and raised on the Texas Gulf Coast, I’ve spent the past few months trying to wrap my head around the Deepwater Horizon explosion and subsequent massive oil spill that is now ruining the coastline from Louisiana to Florida. At times, I have to turn off the news, as the images of dying wildlife hit me deep in my gut.

But now more than ever, this national tragedy has made me grateful for the First Amendment to the United States Constitution. While the oil continues to spew, the media — WordPress.com bloggers included — have been on the frontlines, making sure that Americans and everyone the world over know what is really happening in the Gulf of Mexico.

The oil spill has also made me realize how fragile this freedom is — as the Associated Press reported, “journalists covering the Gulf of Mexico oil spill have been yelled at, kicked off public beaches and islands and threatened with arrest …”

Which is why I’m happy to announce that WordPress.com is a proud supporter of the 1 for All campaign that launches today with the simple goal of raising awareness about the First Amendment. We join more than 1,000 media outlets who have partnered with 1 for All, and we have a special connection to the project — their site is hosted on WordPress.com.

New Theme: Wu Wei

The Taoist concept of “Wu Wei” involves knowing when to act and when not to act. It’s also the name and neat description of the design philosophy behind today’s new one-column theme. Let’s take a look at Wu Wei.

The Wu Wei theme

Wu Wei is a gorgeous theme but we’ve also made sure it’s packed with features for you. Starting from the top, beautiful, fully customizable, drop-down menus using the Menus feature in Appearance → Menus, and an optional Custom Header. You can add a header image below the text, and if you’re uploading your own logo here, choose to hide the text altogether.

And, at the bottom, totally optional Widget areas in the footer of every Wu Wei-themed page of your site. To keep things simple, they’re turned off by default. Visit Appearance → Widgets and add your own Widgets to any of the three available areas to automatically turn the footer Widget area on.

Downtime

As some of you noticed, including a number of major media organizations, WordPress.com had some unexpected downtime on Thursday evening. Whether you’re eating delicious BBQ, as I was, watching a marathon, or about to post your opus, downtime is an annoying interruption and we hate it.

This had nothing to do with our network providers, or data centers, or aliens, it was completely our fault. A single line, nay, a single character out-of-place, slipped by our normal review and testing and started overwriting settings when triggered. The team immediately took the site down to prevent further damage and clean up the mess that had been caused. All hands were called to deck.

First we determined that 11.2 million blogs were unaffected by the bug. So we brought those back up. For the remaining 50,000 or so, including some VIPs, we started restoring the lost settings using backups, audit trails, and logs. This was largely automated and we brought blogs back online as they were fixed, but a few final tricky ones were brought back one-by-one by hand because we wanted to make sure everything was in its right place.

For most folks (99%) your site was only unavailable for an hour, the rest came up a bit after that, and the tricky ones we worked on until Friday morning. Fortunately because of the time of day and the shorter duration, this had a smaller effect on traffic (about 3.9m) versus the last time (5.5m).

As a silver lining to this failing of the cloud, we learned a lot. We’ll be using our newfound experience to keep WP.com a safe, stable, and robust place to hang your hat and have your blog call home.

New Theme: Andrea

Our newest theme is Andrea, a gorgeously minimal two-column theme with an unusual blue color scheme.

Though the design may seem simple on the surface, once you try it you will appreciate its flexibility. I love Andrea both for its elegance and for its level of customization, and I think you will, too.

This theme includes two layout choices. The default layout is wide, yet flexible: the main column becomes wider or narrower depending on the size of your browser window. It is smart enough to adapt not only the width of the main column but to also adjust your images to make sure they fit correctly.

The alternate layout option is fixed-width—and narrower—to give your site a controlled, form-fitting feel. To enable this layout option visit Appearance→Theme Options.

Offtopic: Fox Splitter

Durante este año he tenido que estar escribiendo mucho en inglés, y no es que se me dé mal tampoco, pero hace mucho que no estudio gramática y en ocasiones no estoy muy seguro de si escribo bien. Desde hace un tiempo me he dado cuenta que cuando tengo que escribir en inglés casi siempre tengo las Google Language Tools abiertas en dos pestañas de Firefox: la primera con español-inglés y la segunda con inglés-español. Mi forma de trabajar es sencilla y voy escribiendo en una y en otra, pero cuando llega un momento en el que termino cansando de estar cambiando de pestañas continuamente.

El caso es que esta tarde estaba buscando una extensión para el Firefox cuando me he encontrado otra que sin duda me va a ser útil: Fox Splitter. Esta extensión hace algo que llevo queriendo hacer desde hace mucho tiempo, y es poder poner dos pestañas de Firefox una al lado de la otra. Mirad que bien queda para el caso que comentaba de las Language Tools:

Offtopic: devolver el triángulo en el expansor en Murrine

Desde hace un tiempo estoy probando la beta de Ubuntu Lucid, y aunque por lo general parece que está bien, hay un detalle estético que me molesta bastante. Después de tantos años usando GNOME me había acostumbrado a que los expansores fuesen un pequeño triángulo tal que así y así , sin embargo en esta última versión los han cambiado por éste y éste otro , que además de feos son más grandes.

En principio esto que comento no parece grave, pero la diferencia entre ambos es en algunos casos brutal. Por poner un ejemplo, en la vista Package Explorer de Eclipse:

El responsable de este comportamiento es la versión del paquete gtk2-engines-murrine que se distribuye en Ubuntu Lucid (al día de hoy la 0.90.3+git20100323-0ubuntu2). El problema no es del paquete de Ubuntu, sino que es un cambio upstream. De hecho se rumorea que quizá la próxima versión de Clearlooks copie esta feature... ¬¬. Como comentaba hacía un tiempo que estaba bastante molesto con ésto, pero por casualidad he encontrado una entrada en un blog que comentaba cómo resolver este problema.

La solución es sencilla, y consiste en obligar a GTK que utilice un motor distinto de Murrine para mostrar los expansores. Para ello se debe crear el fichero ~/.gtkrc-2.0 con el siguiente contenido:

Afortunadamente no soy el único molesto con esto, y está reportado en Launchpad en el bug #527789 y en el bugzilla de GNOME en el bug #611159. A ver si hubiera suerte y Cimi se enrollara y diera opción para usar uno u otro en Murrine.

Estado del proyecto: problemas con Marathon, y desarrollo futuro

Principalmente, uno de los indicadores del estado de un proyecto es la actividad de su blog. Éste bien puede ser el caso de eOPSOA, que por unas razones u otras no está teniendo la progresión que Luismi y yo esperábamos cuando nos apuntamos al CUSL. Desgraciadamente ambos estamos trabajando, y por muchas ganas que tengamos los días siguen teniendo 24 horas :-(

Quien estaba haciendo el grueso del trabajo era Luismi, que como comenté al principio del proyecto estaba intentando integrar la herramienta Marathon en eOPSOA. Por desgracia la cosa no ha ido tan bien como nos esperábamos, y no han surgido más que problemas: escasa documentación técnica, código muy acoplado con la UI, problemas para depurar (principalmente RMI)... etc. Es muy muy frustrante porque le ha echado muchísimas horas y un montón de esfuerzo, pero hay veces que las cosas no salen aún a golpes de corazón, y lo ha tenido que abandonar. Además la decisión es dura porque se trataba de su Proyecto Fin de Carrera, y parte de ese trabajo lo ha perdido. Afortunadamente aún existe la posibilidad de integrar SWTBot, que aunque es bastante menos potente que Marathon parece que nos puede dar mejor resultado.

Respecto a mí, tampoco he podido avanzar demasiado con el tema de BIRT. No es excusa, pero entre Máster, trabajo y lo poquito que podía ayudar a Luismi, apenas he tenido tiempo de nada.

Pero no todo van a ser malas noticias para el proyecto. Desde el verano pasado se han certificado varias herramientas con OPSOA, y gracias a la paciencia de Estela y Laura estamos obteniendo un feedback muy bueno. Estamos madurando algunas ideas para mejorar tanto OPSOA como eOPSOA, y sólo es cuestión de sacar tiempo de algún sitio para poder realizarlas. Además, mi contrato se me acaba a fin de mes, y es posible que al menos durante un tiempo pueda dedicar algo de atención al proyecto. Más adelante intentaré escribir sobre estas ideas, pero está relacionado principalmente a mejorar el cuestionario, e intentar extraer conclusiones de él automáticamente.

Por último, sólo pedir un poco de paciencia; las cosas de palacio van despacio, y aunque sea lentamente vamos avanzando poco a poco ;-)

Incorporación de Marathon a eOPSOA

Tras unas semanas de aunar y aclarar ideas con mis tutores (y cotutores!!) de proyecto, y determinar así los objetivos en relación a la idea que tenemos de como mejorar eOPSOA, llegó el momento de realizar la primera aportación a este blog.

Como bien ha comentado David, con objetivo de poder terminar mi PFC y poder aportar así mi granito de arena a eOPSOA, me voy a ocupar de investigar cómo integrar la herramienta de testeo funcional Marathon al proyecto comentado.

Para quién a Marathon le suene a la famosa trilogía de videojuegos, o simplemente a la conocida prueba atlética de resistencia, comentar que Marathon es una herramienta de libre distribución, la cual podemos extender fácilmente y que nos ayuda en el desarrollo de conjuntos de pruebas automatizadas para aplicaciones Java / Swing . Marathon nos ofrece un entorno integrado en el que puede crear conjuntos de pruebas. Además, incluye un grabador, un reproductor y un editor de scripts para facilitar la automatización de pruebas. Marathon se utiliza principalmente para la automatización de pruebas funcionales, aunque también puede ser utilizado para crear conjuntos de pruebas para desarrolladores.

Cuando se lleva tiempo realizando pruebas en los diferentes proyectos entregados, nos damos cuenta que hay cosas que son particularmente difíciles de probar de forma automática y otras donde ocurre todo lo contrario, al existir medios suficientes para abordar la prueba automática. Un ejemplo claro son las interfaces gráficas de usuario.

Para la ejecución de pruebas de forma automática existen numerosas herramientas. No ocurre lo mismo para la generación de los casos de prueba, por ello intentaremos con esta herramienta abordar los objetivos que no se pudieron completar el año pasado (debido a que la herramienta elegida no cumplió las expectativas creadas), con la incorporación de automatización de pruebas, en la parte de Generación y Ejecución de pruebas de eOPSOA. Más adelante, iremos ampliando con más detalle la idea que perseguimos en el proyecto.

Finalmente, no quería terminar este primer cometario, sin dar las gracias a todas las personas que me están ayudando en el desarrollo de mi propósito. Especialmente quería agradecer a mi compañero David Castellanos, la ayuda, disposición y paciencia mostrada, desde el primer día (23 de octubre) que se enteró de mi incorporación al equipo.

Preparando el III CUSL de CLM y el IV CUSL

Después de unos cuantos meses sin actualizar el blog y sin dar apenas señales de vida, volvemos a la acción en eOPSOA con muchas ganas de trabajar y de hacer cosas interesantes.

Algunas cosas han cambiado respecto al año pasado. Para empezar, este septiembre pude presentar mi PFC y ya soy oficialmente Ingenierete en Informática. Como parece que no tuve bastante, este año me he matriculado en el Máster Universitario de Tecnologías Informáticas Avanzadas de la UCLM (los antiguos cursos de [pre]doctorado) así que sigo siendo universitario, y por tanto puedo volver a participar en el CUSL. Pero la principal novedad de este año es que se incorpora al proyecto Luis Miguel Bastante, estudiante también de Ingeniería Informática en la UCLM, y que está realizando su PFC.

Aún faltan algunas cosas por decidir, pero parece que la participación de este año va a ir en línea a la del año pasado, e intentaremos realizar algunos de los objetivos que se quedaron pendientes del año pasado. Por ejemplo Luismi va a investigar cómo integrar la herramienta de testeo funcional Marathon en eOPSOA, y en mi caso, voy intentar generar reportes usando para ello el framework BIRT.

Aunque todavía no ha comenzado oficialmente el período de participación ya estamos adelantando algo de trabajo, por ejemplo hemos cambiado el tema del blog a uno un poco menos funky, y en el trunk del SVN se está trabajando en la refactorización del modelo Ecore del proyecto.

Básicamente, hay que averiguar el offset de la cabecera con vditool y luego montarla.

Primero, hay que averiguar el offset de la partición correspondiente:

Ahora se coge el número de sectores del principio de la partición y se multiplica por el tamaño del sector. La partición 1 empieza en el sector 63, y cada sector son 512 bytes, así que el offset es 32256:

Paso de pegarme con update-grub. Como grub-install funciona, lo único que hay que hacer es generar el fichero menu.lst, customizándolo según las imágenes que se vayan a arrancar.

De momento he puesto el fichero a mano y funciona. Ahora, hay que generarlo en función de las imágenes instaladas.

Hoy, muchos problemas con discos duros; ergo mucho tiempo perdido. De todas formas, ya estoy más cerca de conseguir que arranque la imagen instalada. Todavía tengo que lidiar un poquillo con grub-install y update-grub.

Intento poner una imagen mínima en la primera partición del primer disco duro, para tener centralizado el arranque y poder tener un nodo en caso de necesitarlo. La imagen más pequeña posible se consigue con debootrstrap, del orden de 200-300 MB, pero no he conseguido hacer que arranque en las imágenes de VirtualBox (no he podido instalar grub correctamente). Mucho tiempo perdido con esto.

Por lo tanto, estoy instalando una netinstall básica, que llegará a casi 700 MB. No es lo más idóneo, pero es lo que hay.

He comprobado que /sbin/init no desaparece al preparar la imagen con HYDRA para su despligue. No sé porqué desapareció ayer.

El problema de los UUID en grub es que update-grub no actualiza el fichero menu.lst. Al parecer, es un bug ya detectado por mucha gente, aunque no está reportado :S

Es posible que el problema con GRUB sea porque estoy distribuyendo un sistema demasiado básico. Voy a instalar una Molinux, entonrno gráfico incluido, a ver qué tal.

Ajustando las pruebas de instalación para la demo. Sigo con el problema de automount.
Problemas también con el IceUtil::NullHandleException, que sale cuando quiere. Ser\u00e1 que tiene inteligencia artificial.

El problema del automount lo he resuelto, aunque de forma poco elegante. La solución ha consistido en añadir unas instrucciones en el InstallerServer para desmontar las particiones recién creadas antes de formatearlas. A falta de algo mejor, es lo que hay de momento.

Intentando preparar una demo para David, con las pruebas.

He pensado que la instalación se puede hacer en local, montando un disco .vdi para hacer ahí la instalación del GRUB y las particiones.
Problemas montando el disco vdi. Parece que las únicas imégenes .vdi que monta son las que ya tengo, no monta nuevas. Voy a copiar la que tengo de debian, a ver si monta las copias. Si es así, las utilizaré.

Es posible montar las copias, pero después de perder mucho tiempo con eso, me he dado cuenta de que me da igual. Para formatear una partición se utiliza el dispositivo especial que la maneja, y eso no lo tengo con los .vdi; por lo que he decidido utilizar un segundo disco duro en otro ordenador y hacer ahí las pruebas.

El segundo disco duro parece ser buena idea, aunque tengo problemas con el automontaje. Tengo que desactivarlo.
